Joe Posted this yesterday to the cheeze group.

From: "Joe Desrosiers" <Joe@joehauler.com>
Sent: Monday, September 21, 2009 2:44 PM
Subject: Baja Race course / crashed plane

Ran past Mikes last Friday
the climb out of there was nicely graded.
Randy Ross's race loosing rock was removed and they are paving the last
short climb out to the saddle to avoid the last rough section
Mike said he's doing it to try to get Sal to run the race through his place
Rancho Conception (new) owners will never allow the race past their nice new
place.

the 7 mile run from Valle T to the green meadow towards Yanno Colorado has a
nice fence 4 miles in just after the sand and whoops

This crashed plane is behind El Coyote near Rancho Buena Vista

Rancho Concepcion is owned by AstroBaja who is building there an astronomy theme bed & breakfast.

Mike's Sky Rancho is owned by Mike Leon Jr. (not related to Astrobaja/ Mike)... is a motel & campground several miles north and a bit west of Rancho Concepcion... been there since the late 1960's.

Maybe before? I was there in '71 and it was well established. Looked like it had been there for quite a while.

Yup... it was a big project for Mike Leon Sr., a Tijuana businessman... The road in from the south was the only way in, originally... That's how my folks and I first got there in 1972... He built the road north (to San Matias/ Valle Trinidad in /or by 1970, and that was a short cut to Ensenada once the highway to San Felipe was paved that far east (about 1976).

The oldest reference to Mike's Sky Rancho I have is the 1967 edition of Arnold Senterfitt's 'Airports of Baja California'.

The 1962 Lower California Guidebook and the 1964 Auto Club guide do not mention it, but the 1970 AAA guide and Cliff Cross' 1970 Baja Guide do. So, it would seem Mike's Sky Rancho was established after 1964-- but before or in the year 1967... ie. 1965, 1966 or 1967.

Why is it that every time I see the title to this post, I'm reminded of Brokeback Mountain?:?:

That is just gross... but none-the-less, title changed so you don't get any ideas like that!

The first time I met Mike Sr was May of 1987 in his bar. He told of how he rode horseback looking for a place to buy. I don't remember the exact year but I think it was 1964 or 1965. I also got educated on Baja off road racing.
