Telcel USB Amigo 3G Network Card
I am about to take vacation in PV and I will need Internet access and my verizon card is WAY to expensive.
Can anyone answer the following questions:
1. What kind of speeds can you get?
2. What kind of speeds in San Felipe, if you know?
3. How much for 1 days use
4. How many MB or GB do you get per day?
5 Any recomendation on the brand of usb card to get if I am goin to use it with a 3g router??

I spoke to TelCel in San Felipe about 6 months ago. The card is $100 with a month to month charge. They were vague as how many MB/GB saying it was being upgraded in the area as we spoke. At that time they said their
card would not support Skpe in SF, but it did work with Skype in Mexicali and Tijuana.

I just went through this with TelCel in San Jose del Cabo last week. The only 3G card that works in Mexico is sold by TelCel

I borrowed a Mexican friend's 3G card to test it. Installation was easy. I found the speed very slow, could not make a VOIP call, could not download
UTube videos. The best use was for email but that was slow sending and receiving.

TelCel staff had no idea. From my test, I would guess about 1Mb.

Cel has two plans:
1. Pay as you go. They sell you the 3G card flor 1,100 pesos which includes one month use. Thereafter, it is 615 pesos per month for unlimited use
and no contract.
2. Contract. They give you the card for free. You pay 415 pesos per month for 18 months unlimited use.

You have to buy TelCel's card.
Their plan(s) really didn't meet my needs, so I passed. In my opinion, the system in Mexico is not ready for prime time.

Just got this off another forum in San Felipe.
Good news for those laptop users that are too far away from a wi-fi
network or do not have telephone/dsl access at their house or trailer park in
San
Felipe. The new Telcel prepaid 3G access plan is available through our
local Telcel dealer on Mar Caribe. You can buy the USB dongle with the first
month unlimited access to the 3G network for 2000 pesos. You then buy a
monthly refresh of the account for 621 pesos (about $48 dollars) for a typical
download speed of 1.5 Mb/second. Note that "unlimited" access means that
you must comply with the fair use policies - they may slow you down to 128
kb/s if you exceed 20 Gb of downloading in any month. Still, this seems like
a reasonable option for people who do not have an alternative way to access
the internet.

Note that "unlimited" does not mean "unlimited"; they have a fair access policy similar to the satellite services, which will cut you down to a pretty
slow speed after you exceed your monthly traffic limit (for the remainder of the month).
Don't recall the exact numbers, but depending on the plan, that limit is something like 2 or 3 gigs per month. That's not a lot of traffic if you're
thinking about things like video...

I signed with Tecel and used it in Mulege in Aug.
and ran out of days,went to Telcel in town and know one knew what it was,had to wait to get back home in Rosarito to pay more.They charge about $1.00
a day.You can buy as many as you want with a mini. of 20.00Pesos.
