Landslide South of Loreto in Mountains

on our 'BPE' (Baja Pony Express) published regularly by Cheryl, there has just been sent out a road alert of a big cave-in somewhere in the mountains south of Loreto, and it was commented that the 18-wheelers would not be able to turn around, thereby creating a back-up[ in traffic in both directions.

Advised not to attempt transitting that area for at least a couple days, or until thoroughly checked out first.

There is a big Tropical Storm going thru there as I type (OLAF, I think) dumping a lot of rain, where they already had a lot of rain a month ago from hurricane JIMENA. We are feeling the effects of the storm here too, with heavy surf and high winds, but no rain at my casa currently. But I did get some rain yesterday late afternoon.

Hey Ed. Could we talk you into making a run down there & check it out, and getting back to us? Shouldn't be more than maybe 25 miles from Nopolo! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Sorry, everyone, about the "posted image" !! It was supposed to be the CIMSS infra-red of OLAF and have no idea where that little thing that came up is from!

SO WHAT'S UP?

Or down, as the case may be? We have three friends, couples actually, about to drive to or from the border and it'd be nice all around to know if the road is open.

Just talked to a friend here in Loreto. His son lives in Cd. Constitucion and he, himself, is headed to La Paz tomorrow. He says the road is open. There had been a flooded arroyo and a desrumble but the road is open to traffic. No problemo. I have not driven the road myself, but my source seems quite credible.

My bet on location of the landslide would be that clifftop viewpoint just north of Juncalito. They have had so many slides there over time.

nope, the overlook north of El J is clear. and I saw bus traffic on Hwy 1 heading north yesterday afternoon, so the road must be passable. will watch today, too, let you know.

reality\'s never been of much use out here...

Our thanks to you folks who are keeping an eye on the road situation. Some of our friends and family who will be driving down here soon are elderly and need to know what to anticipate.

Not to go all gooey on you, but isn't this a wonderful thing, to be able to communicate and help each other over long distances, via the Internet?
