Trip report San Quintin

Got away for a 3 day weekend to explore San Quintin on the quads.

Shrimp tacos at Tacos Fenix in Ensenada for breakfast started things off just right.

Thats me at Cabo San Quintin at the end of the 8 mile peninsula.

Awesome, endless quadding! Huge variety of terrain - flat out, volcanoes, trails, sand dunes, beach runs and stunning scenery.

These are the sand dunes at El Pabellon

Saturday night Happy Hour at Cielito Lindo was a hoot. That Jaiva (Rock Crab Claws) Plate was a chore to eat but what an adventure on a plate.

The wind blew hard on Fri and most boats came in early, so we chose not to fish outside on Sat. The Bloodydeck reports indicate we chose wrong.

Oh well, we found a great Pangero to take us out fishing in the mouth of the bay for a substantial discount over local sportfishing charters. We caught our fill of rockfish, bass sculpin and this beauty.

This is Juan who lives at the fish camp out on the point (Punta Azufre) west of Santa Maria.

The Los Olivos campground is immaculate! Owner Tom and caretaker Miguel Angel were great hosts of a stellar facility.

No surf, but we knew that beforehand.

All in all, a great Baja weekend. Endless shrimp tacos and Pacificos.

About as good as it gets.

I love SQ!

No worries

That's a fun weekend trip. Used to do it a lot years ago. Is the access to the beach at what we used to call "short beach" to travel out to the end of the peninsula open to everyone now? It was closed off back in the early nineties to campers with 4x's and motorcycles but the locals were allowed in. There was a big fence and gate.

I went there and it was open. Drove all the way down to the end of Cabo San Quintin, camped/surfed where the beach ends, although I felt like shark bait. We hiked all around Monte Mazo and I will claim a first ascent on Monte Mazo on my mountain bike. Even if somebody had a sand worthy 4x4 to get there, I figure nobody is crazy enough to push/carry the bike through a lot of sand to access the base and make the climb, which was very steep, loose and technical. I cleaned it. Great view from the top.
