In June 2009 the 7-11 franchise holder in Mexico brought 104 am/pm stores from BP. See:

Great information Riom! How does BP fit in with Pemex?

Pemex presumably lease out the convenience store space in their stations (and those leases can be brought/sold amongst the operators).

BP own the am/pm brand (and the Arco brand) in the US, Mexico etc.

The gas stations are also franchised as far as I've heard. Big signs overhead that say "Franquicia."

I don't think it means anything anymore. Another "good idea" that never left the good idea stage.

I'm thinking the lime Slurpee should be standard in Mexico....as the cola is in the states.

If it hasn't opened yet, it hasn't received any complaints and has never delivered an incorrect measure - so gets a perfect quality rating. :-)

A new mailbox place near here did a similar thing - advertised themselves as "the most reliable mailbox service" before they opened, which was strictly true as they'd never missed a delivery (they hadn't had any yet). They folded less than a year later.

Pemex stations are franchised. The main reason that so many Pemex stations have sprung up in the past several years is because of the convenience stores. Owners make way for money in the store than they do at the pump. Anyone count the number of Pemex stations in the San Quintin valley? You think they could all make a go of it selling fuel alone? Think the new Pemex in Guerrero Negro is due to population growth?

Actually, this global economy thing gives me a chuckle. Obviously the local Ensenada franchisee had contract renegotiation with AM/PM and 7-Eleven made him a better offer. So, he goes from dealing with a company based in London, England (yes, although officially known as BP, it was once known as British Petroleum), to a company based in Tokyo, Japan. Yep. 7-Eleven is a Japanese company.
