Agua Verde Camping Trip
Last week, we took a little well deserved camping holiday to our favorite spot Agua Verde. We towed our new Whaler so we could do some diving and
fishing which ended up being a bit of a problem as the last quarter of the road into Agua Verde is in very bad shape. The first part was great but
after that resort looking development things were really crappy...we had to stop many times and fill the road with rocks so the trailer would not fall
over the cliffs...kinda hairy and of course it was dark when we got that far. It would be OK in just a pick up but I do not recommend taking this road
towing a trailer.
Pretty cranky from the long day on the road, we camped on the beach by the village the night of our arrival as a truck we met on the road said the
road to our normal secret spot was washed out. The next morning, we went to check it out and managed to get into it anyway even with no road...blazed
another trail.
When we got back to the beach maybe a half hour later, we were surprised to find that someone had stolen a huge bag of donated stuff we had been
gathering all year to give to the villagers...sheesh! The police and store owner warned us that there had been several thefts lately and that they
were very sad about it because a few of the gringos who often visit there will no longer return after being robbed. This was one of the safest places
around I thought...they claimed there was a guy just out of prison who was probably responsible...only takes one! what a shame.
So this put a real damper on our holiday as we worried about our remote camp being vandalized when we were out in the boat. I remained guarding the
camp while Juan fished...with no luck.
We reluctantly left camp one day to scout out a more remote boat camping spot for next time. Wooo hooo, that whaler goes like stink...she flies! loved
it!
Juan took me out for lunch in a favorite seafood bar...where we dined on fresh scallops he dove for and he speared us a nice triggerfish for dinner
but there sure werent any bigger fish at all.
Check out these osprey nests precariously perched atop these 2 tips on high rocks!!! It was neat seeing all the booby birds on their nests too.
The next day was windy so we hiked up to a nifty cave that has some paintings in it. It was a big 2 room cave...I could just imagine living in
it...the view was so gorgeous from the spacious cave.
here are some fall colours in the desert...the red berries were like baja holly and not too bad to eat either.
We stopped into Loreto on our way back north and checked out the sunday market...wow...so cool...great booths and excellent food options...even had
lamb tacos!! and the veggies were awesome and we bought some asparagus, eggplant and peppers we cant get in Asuncion.
here is the pigskin seller... make sure you see this if you are in loreto on a sunday...super cool.
We decided to check out some more camping possibilities on the other side of Conception Bay so we camped at Punta Arena which was an eerie experience
to camp among the burned out homes...sad. This is a good reminder of what can happen to leased land in baja. The caretaker there charged us 60 pesos a
night to camp there. Playa Naranjos looked full up and we were happy to camp with nobody around...nice and quiet.
After setting up camp we zoomed over to Pompano's B&B...beer and brownies....for a Pacifico (which Juan only drank to be polite)
the next day, we explored all along the coast of the other side which was terrific. We ended up meeting some kayakers who told us the best spots to
camp and where the cave paintings were close to there. So we will be back in the spring to see those. Another free lunch and back to camp for a swim
and dinner.
Here is a fish camp at the point...a classic...good snorkeling there and another fish for din din.
It was a lovely little break and I'm always so intrigued by how calm the gulf side is...so quiet at night with little wavlets lapping up against the
shore....so peaceful.
With Agua Verde experiencing some theft issues, well...looks like we wont be back there for awhile. we are excited about our new Whaler camping
excursion in the spring to discover some new areas.

Now that is gourmet cave dwelling if I have ever seen it. Great trip report.

Bummer about getting robbed there. Looks like the norm just about everywhere in Baja these days. I am a believer in Whalers so all the talk about it I
was hoping to see a couple of photos of it too.

Yeah, we LOVE our new sharpe type doggie Nescafe...bummer the dogs went with us instead of staying to guard the stuff...sheesh! we left them in camp
after that. Gosh I didnt take any photos of the whaler...pompano did when we were leaving though...I sure was iimpressed how stable it was and how she
zipped along on a plane and so stable for diving...just great.

Love the cave perspectives and hand prints especially. Oh and the osprey nests. Karma is waiting for the jerk who stole your stuff. As you mentioned,
it probably is just 1 or 2 ratones and they'll go down eventually and you guys can return with a good feeling about this special place.

That is really horrible to hear about the thefts in Agua Verde. That is my favorite place in Baja. We were there just a week or two before you and
had no issues at all. I guess in the future we will have to ask around a bit when coming into town.
