CAPRICHIO'S, LA PAZ
We -- a party of four -- had breakfast at Caprichio's in La Paz a few days ago and for me it was a first-time visit. Located in what I believe was
once the residence of a former governor of BCS, the restaurant is worth visiting merely to enjoy the simple splendor of the architecture and the
furnishings. The owners of the restaurant have done us all a favor by preserving and enhancing the graciousness of the former home.
Unfortunately, I can't be so complimentary about the food. Two of us ordered the puff pastry filled with spinach, cheese and egg, and both orders
came out of the oven soggy and uncooked. Either the oven was not hot enough or the spinach was added to the ingredients while still wet and the
result was a tasty filling encased in a soggy lump of uncooked pastry dough.
I sent mine back and ordered chicken enchilladas which, when they were finally delivered by the mesero, were lukewarm, the side of refried beans had
obviously come out of a can and were served with a glaze over them, indicating they'd been sitting around a long while before being brought to the
table.
While the mesero was diligent in refilling our coffee cups, the coffee was also lukewarm, being served out of a thermal pot that had lost its ability
to keep anything hot or had perhaps never been warmed up before the coffee was poured into it. Either way, the lukewarm coffee, the lukewarm and
just plain uncooked food we were served is a powerful reason never to return to Caprichio's.
Too bad, the place is so pretty.

In Dec. 2002 we went to a wedding and reception at what used to be "Governor's Residence". It was on the bay and had a large palapa. Does this look
like the same place? No restaurant then as far as I can remember.

We won't go back there. Our food was obviously removed from the freezer and microwaved. Hot on the outside and still frozen in the center.
Caprico's is not on the water. They are located on Madero between 5 de Mayo and Constitucion.
I think the world is run by C- students.

That really is too bad because that building is a lovely setting - didn't it used to be a B & B before Caprichio's took it over? I have not eaten
there, but have heard similar comments to those above from friends - so have stayed away.

I had a beautiful little vegetarian pizza there in June, so delicious I ate it with reverence. A midday meal. Proves the variability of restaurants.
I do like the old building very much.
