Help me plan my trip! (La Paz and South)

My another Baja trip is coming soon. :bounce: Can't wait!

I heard from my friend who just drove the road along the East side (from Cabo Pulmo to San Jose del Cabo) and he raved about it. I am now thinking of checking it out when I go there next month. Thank you everybody who gave me nice info about the road, by the way.

My problem is that because I have other things planned out, I only have 2 days (1 night and 2 days) before I have to be in Los Cabos after leaving La Paz. I was going to check out Ventana area too, and I am not sure if I can fit a few hours of kite surfing in Ventana, and driving along the coast to San Jose del Cabo. In 1 and a half days.

Ideally, I can leave La Paz in the morning, get to Ventana early afternoon, stay there over night, then drive along the coast down to San Jose del Cabo the next day, getting there before dark.

Does this sounds doable? I have no idea how long these drive will take, so it is difficult to know if this is a crazy plan.

Also I am wondering if there is a short cut from Ventana to Los Barriles rather than going all the way back to Mex 1. As usual, I have rental passenger car. . .

Hola mika, if you drive towards los planes from ventana, there is a fairly newly paved road that will take you to san antonio and mex1 thereby eliminating the need to drive back to la paz and catch mex1. it'll take you about 1 1/2 hours to get to los barriles.

it has been a very popular way to get to and back from la paz as it eliminates a lot of hilly and small town traffic and mordida stops.

is anyone aware of the condition of that specific road after the 2009 hurricanes ?

your trip sounds very doable depending on the road from la ribera/cabo pulmo/los frailes and beyond to san jose del cabo, if that's the route you're taking. the road going south from punta colorada can be a pretty bumpy ride depending on it's last maintenance. i've never driven southerly of cabo pulmo.

BIEN SALUD, DA RAT

ask mentioned above L.V is a very short distance from La Paz... 1 hour or less... if you reference was to drive down the coast road you might be talking about the "dirt" road from Los Planes to Pescadero ,Cardinal, Los Barriles (this part will take 2-3 hours depending on stops to see the fantastic beachs)then out on HWY 1 to La Cuerva then out to La Ribera (30-40 minutes)and then the "dirt" road all the way to San Jose(this is a rough road with a lot of great scenery so plan on several hours to San Jose del Cabo.... remember/verify if you are on un-improved roads("dirt") your rental car insurance may be void.... if something happens have it towed to the pavement before making your service call to the rental agency....

The road from La Ribera south is being graded today -- they usually do south to Vinorama and then stop. The road south of Vinorama to La Playita and San Jose del Cabo is in fair shape and slow going, but beware as on Feb 07 about 15 km. of it is part of an Off Road Race and before that there will be cars pre-running. After the race it will be pretty chewed up. If you want to miss the poor section turn West at Vinorama and take the Palo Escopeta road which joins Highway 1 near the airport.
