3 Killed in Military Anti-drug Plane Crash

February 27, 2010

TIJUANA, Mexico (AP) — Mexican marines have found the wreckage of a small military anti-drug patrol plane reported missing earlier this week in northern Mexico.

Military officials said Friday that the aircraft's three occupants were found dead at the scene, just south of the Baja California city of Ensenada.

The marines and army conduct joint operations in the region, and it was not immediately clear which branch the victims belonged to.

The plane was on a routine flight to detect drug planting when it went missing Tuesday.

While drug traffickers have sometimes opened fire on official aircraft, Mexico has also had difficulties in safely operating official craft.

TIJUANA, Mexico – The three military officers aboard a small plane reported missing last week died when the aircraft crashed near San Antonio hill, located approximately 30 kilometers (nearly 19 miles) southeast of Ensenada, a city in the northwestern state of Baja California, the Mexican army said.

Air force Capt. Jorge Alonso Hernandez Carrillo, who was flying the plane, air force 2nd Lt. Julio Cesar Galindo Velazco and army Capt. Cuauhtemoc Martinez Flores died in the accident.

The Cessna C182S was reported missing Tuesday while on a mission to find marijuana fields and clandestine air strips.

The officers’ bodies were recovered on Friday, the army said.

The plane crashed “due to bad weather conditions,” the army said.

More pot is being grown within Mexico as efforts to reduce more dangerous drugs have taken some of the attention from it in recent years.
