TJ police make arrests in suspected gasoline thefts

TIJUANA — Thirteen suspects were in custody Saturday, accused of participating in a criminal ring that sold gasoline stolen from pipelines belonging
to the state-owned petroleum company, PEMEX, Tijuana’s municipal police announced.
Police raided three properties at different locations in eastern Tijuana, where they found nearly 8,000 gallons of gasoline being sold to the public.
At one location, they found a key that gave access to a pipeline near the free road to Tecate. The suspects had stored the flammable material in tanks
with no safety precautions, police said.
State and municipal police collaborated in the operation, with assistance from the federal Attorney General’s Office and Tijuana firefighters.

You have to admire their courage. The Mexican equivalent of an Iraqi bomb squad. Perhaps they should be nominated for an Oscar.

I ride my dirt bike in the hillsides behind Rosarito and am amazed at how unprotected and vulnerable the above-ground pipeline running from Rosarito
to the east is. You can ride right up to it and knock on it. Didn't know it was carrying gasoline though- thought is crude or natural gas.
Surprised it took this long to be breached actually.

I think it carries both gasoline and diesel. They run a pig through it to clean it out and then change products.

a pig only cleans the pipe line,, what they do to change products is put a buffer in place , I really forgot what they use,, some thing like kerosene.
I remember when I worked for Shell Oil pipe line in LA,. we had alot of missing gasoline,, what they did then , now this is 35 years ago,, oh forgot
to say this pipe line went thru south central LA,,,
any way the pipe line was rated for maybe 2 thousand pounds PSI,,, so they did a pressure test of the pipe line which is they do on all the pipe
lines.
but this time they really brougth it up over the top..
guess what happened ,, they blew a gas station .the gas station had tapped into the pipe.. but didnt use the right piping and fittings
