Free Road Springtime report

Photo above is from 2008 on the hill above La Mision. I'm happy to report that the area is greener and more beautiful in '10 than that '08 spring.

San Diego trip from my home on Punta Banda was Monday/Tuesday 8-9 March, 2010.

Enjoyed enchiladas(60 pesos) at Los Pelicanos on the water in Rosarito beach with a very tasty bloody mary(40 pesos). Machaca con huevos and an omelette ordered by guests also looked good.
Home-made chips and salsa included. I was the only gringo customer along with approximately 30 locals.

Picked up normal San Diego supplies at BevMo, Lowes, 99cent and my mail. In addition to the creative BevMo importing, I brought a Volare's large pizza south with me.

Volare's is just east of SD airport on Barnett, 1 block west of PacHwy.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/volare-san-diego ...for customer reviews.
I always add their marinara sauce on side to my pizza orders. yumm.
"Broken English Only Spoken Here" sign above kitchen lets you know that this is old-school italian in a fun dive atmosphere.

Tacos Aaron in Rosarito is on main drag, in a big trailer across street from Office Depot on north side of town. Had chorizo/huevos, chicken mole and chicken adobado. 6 tacos, $8 including tip.

If you've never tried the free road, you're missing all of the fun shops and restaurants along the way. Or at least hop off the toll road south at La Fonda and enjoy the hills, farmland and greenery in Baja California. La Mision to Ensenada free road is same mileage as toll road and 10 minutes longer due to the hills and curves.

I'm splicing today's mini-trip(12 March) on free road from Ensenada to La Fonda(no, thanks on that restaurant any more). Didn't have camera with me, but, the sunny day was perfect, 10mph wind and waves were crashing below me on the beaches during my picnic lunch . Very little traffic to report on free road.

Glad to be back on Punta Banda at sunset and about to crack the first Pacifico of the day. aaahhhhhh!

I was on it last week to El Tigre and then to Valle de Guadelupe. I told my friend that it can`t be greener. The farm ponds are full, the ground is saturated, there is water flowing everywhere (except in the main river in Valle de Guadelupe). They have been blessed with a wet year and hopefully March will bring a few more storms!! Very beautiful!!
