Loreto Marine National Park

I have heard a rumor that the new proposed rules for the Park eliminate all spearfishing within the boundaries. Previously, I believe only spearfishing with tanks was illegal. Anybody know for sure? I don't think they have anything out in print yet.

This is kinda of silly, or worse, you are asking for clarification on killing fish in a Marine sanctuary?

Why not just move outside of the boundaries, and leave the space to renewal. Or better yet, go diving and leave the fish in peace.

Fact !!

Besides, it's nothing new. Has been in force for several years.

Gee thanks gnukid that is a really helpful response. Perhaps you should do some research on the purpose and goals of the Loreto National Marine Park which was created in 1996. It was a very good idea and has produced some observeable results. Several species (turtles, sharks, rays and sea lions) are much more abundant now and I feel that this is a direct result of the Parks creation. Those of us that use the area contribute directly by buying our fishing licenses locally in Loreto, purchasing day use passes and reporting illegal use of the area by commercial fishermen. Plus most of the gringos I know practice catch and release and only keep a few to eat. Trust me, sportsmen are not the problem!

Now there is one I never heard before. Catch and release spearfishing. Excuse me Mr. Fish, please ignore that hole that goes through the middle of your body it is only there for sport.

A friend of mine had his spear gun confiscated because someone said he was spear fishing in the park when he wasn't. They also threatened to take his boat. He went to the office in Santa Rosalia to try and get his gun back but they wouldn't release it.

ya, right. why did your friend take spear fishing gear to a park where spear fishing is banned? sounds like authorities are keeping up on things and catching the criminals.

He was staying in San Bruno and had been spearfishing outside of the park boundaries, the spear gun was in his boat. The rangers came in the night and removed the gun from his boat, when he tried to get it back they claimed someone saw him spearfishing in the park.

Went to a meeting in Feb. at the port of Escondido with the Directors of the marine park there to present information. Approx. 40 Norte Americanos and Jose Torres in the crowd. Lots of questions were asked and some where answered with good content. Some questions about illegal commercial fishing in the park were not. and these are the guys running the show.

But what it really came down to was something we are seeing here in the good old USA. Goverment jobs paid for by a select few. The Tourist. It was explained to us that they could hire lots of folks to pick up trash on the islands that you are not to walk on and maintain the Marine Park crew of 12 with jobs. Stimulate the economy. thats the park, jobs

Here is a description of the event this Sunday. It's a family event with puppet shows, etc.

The Loreto Bay National Park invites the public to attend their spring festival, which will be held this Sunday, March 21st at 5:00pm at the dock on the malecón. There will be activities, games, prizes, music and fun for the entire family. The event is absolutely free. Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn more about and support our marine park.

I agree with everything you say here. Sportfishing is not the problem, the problem is primarily over-fishing and abusive commercial practices, huka reef fishing divers etc... speafishing with scub gear and fishing in sanctuaries, etc...

You asked about spearfishing in the marine sanctuary...

Spearfishing is fine when done for the purpose of providing food for you and done so with respect to the region and laws.

So go have fun, just do it outside the marine park.
