The arroyo above that rock is a lovely hike. Climbing that little wall to the right of the big rock is more of a challenge in recent years! Much
easier when I was a youngster in my 50's.

Not to brag, but...ahem...I climbed over that rock two weeks ago. I was more worried about my dog Paco. He is big and heavy. If he should lose his
footing, he could really hurt himself. While these thoughts were running through my mind, Paco sprang past my ear and landed on top of the rock...No
Problema!
Roger- In the "before" picture, is that an archeologist or is he the guy who painted the petroglyphs? Funny, he didn't look that old 
Shari- If you come this way before May, you will surely stop by for a visit. I can take you or easily describe how to find it.

Hola Tony...that 'before' photo is from one of 'Uncle' Erle's expeditions..circa 1959. .on the left is Ricardo Castillo, who still lives right here in
Mulege (Villas de Mulege, Coyote leaseholds, etc). The other gent is none other than Blackjack..JW Black, expedition ramrod, inventor, and expert
campfire Beechnut spitter.
The 'after' photo is a group of escapees from Bellevue Hosp. New York.
The Painted Canyon is very easy to fine..as the many hundreds over the years have found out..and I already sent shari instructions. Come to mi casa
when they arrive and we'll open a keg. 
We used to camp over there many times years ago..a magical place indeed..you can still hear those ancient voices late at night, murmuring something
about..... those damn Jake brakes...

That may have been a bit later than '59 Roger... you know how nit picky I am with dates and history, sorry! 
The photo is on page 113 of Gardner's 1967 book 'Off the Beaten Path in Baja' covering their expeditions of 1966. The Butterfly (ATV in photo) was an
invention of J.W. Black in the mid 60's, and Ricardo looks the same as the other 1966 pictures of him I have... and that was a trip the Choral Pepper
and Gardner flew in Capt. Muņoz single engine and had to stop at the Santa Maria Sky Ranch and wait for better weather before flying on to Mulege
where the rest of the group was standing by. Choral and Jack Pepper hadn't yet met Gardner in '59.
Uncle Erle was always curious about the other side of Concepcion Bay... as the maps of the time showed nothing over there... no roads, nothing. Not
only did they open a road along the other side, but they made a runway for Capt. Muņoz over there too (a mud flat).
While the painted cliff was shared, I always wondered why he made no mention of the mine ruins near the tip of the Concepcion peninsula...
Can you get Mexicali Beer by the case down there? The new Mexicali Beer (brewed in Tecate) is quite good, but you don't see it too many places (like
in the old Garner book days)!

Before and after potos are great... in fact, the same book that Pompano's photos came from ('Off the Beaten Track in Baja') is the trip the Gardner
party took south of Bahia de los Angeles opening the road to Punta San Francisquito (Feb. 1966) when they found the mysterious walls, date palm,
reservoir that led Choral Pepper to believe they found an abandoned Jesuit mission site: http://vivabaja.com/109

Good to see you and Les yesterday! The rock in Pompano's photo is about a third of the way up the rock canyon. No, I didn't photograph it. I was too
occupied planning how to get up on it and beyond. That's not a climb for all but the fittest and not really good to try on a hot afternoon like
yesterday. I did it two weeks earlier and in the morning. Also, I was wearing hiking boots.  You did get to see and photograph the majority of the petroglyphs though.
