Massive log jam at check points on Sunday

This photo shows the back up of traffic at the checkpoint going north in the Santo Tomas area. Obviously, with it being Easter the traffic was going to be heavier but the army did not make any accommodations for this; they had room for 4 lanes but only were using 2 and they were checking every vehicle as normal instead of a more random method. As a result it took about an hour to get through this check point. Lots of folks peeing off the side of the road, cars overheating, etc etc.

Seems they would have used all four lanes but IF checkpoints have a purpose why would you change your inspection criteria just because a holiday. Do smugglers and others not work on holidays?

Wow. Definitely a record. For once I'm glad I came back early.

Was in that same line about three years ago, Easter Sunday. It was mainly locals going home. Some people with 4x4's were going up the hill, cutting the switchback out. Some made it, some did not. Was fun to watch! You can see the trail in the lower left corner. It gets real ugly near the top.

Maybe it is different in today's climate, but a few years ago, the weekend of the last presidential election, we drove from Cabo to the border. Every checkpoint was empty. Not a soldier to be seen.

There is an (unwritten)law that all military are pulled into base camp around the time of elections. We use the time to do all our smuggling.
