Dead snake in the middle of the road...

Yes, we came upon this poor fellow while on a quad ride last week below Punta San Jose. He had just been run over by probably the only vehicle we saw that day.

I'm not sure what type of snake it is but as you can see he had just had a nice lunch consisting of 6 baby mice and both adult mice.

This is how we found him, damaged mid way and having ejected his most recent catch right out from his wound...

If you think this is too gross then please don't look.

Haven't had a bad trip yet....

Oww! What a shame to lose such a beautiful creature. May the person who ran him/her over be infested with lots of mice!

I can't find a photo in the Baja Amphibians and Reptiles book to match, seeing as only the belly is showing.

Probably a Western Coachwhip or Latigo. They are seen in many colors and patterns, have that racer body. Big adults can be 6 feet long and at that stage usually have a dark head, lighter body, hence the Coachwhip name. Down south here one might see a hundred of these to any other species, they are that prevalent. They look like they are moving very quickly when you spot them travelling through the desert but snakes have a top speed of about 8MPH.

Kinda gross, but really cool.

The moral of the story is don’t pig out because you become sluggish and cannot move very fast when you need to.

Maybe he just pigged out too much and exploded! :light:

A decade ago I was traveling South Africa in a '73 Kombi Westfalia near the Transkei. I came around a corner doing about 70 kmh's and there was a fat snake sllithering across the road almost taking up both lanes.

The brakes were inadequate. Just before I hit it I released the brakes.

Boom....Boom!!!

I pull over to see what kind of snake I just sadly crushed and if any suspension components were trailing the vehicle.

I step out of the drivers door, and see it slithering into the jungle. I Hope it lived.

Doesn't really compare to the rhino story though that occurred a couple hundred miles to the north.
