Baja 2712-Miles
We criss-crossed the peninsula over two weeks and racked up a total of 2712-miles down and back and everywhere in between. It was a whirlwind of an
adventure, but the times spent with Antonio/Baja Cactus, Johnny Campbell at Horsepower Ranch, Oscar & Matilda at Santa Ynez and of course we
stopped at Patches Cabin to soak in the desert view from the patio. We pushed south along the Pacific Beaches to Guerro Negro before heading out to
Tortugas, Asuncion and Abreojos where Chelo hosted us and we spent some time catching up. Over the course of two weeks we picked Ricardo's brain at
Rice N Beans twice before our foray to Scorpion Bay at the Beck Beach House. The roads and trails were about the same as always including the short
run out to San Carlos. The Pacific Beach was gorgeous on the run south along the sand and then we entered HELL, also known as CABO. We secretly fled
that mess...and made a quiet stop at Senor Jimmy's to reflect before bumping through the mountains of La Paz to watch the old school cars finish the
NORRA race on the La Paz Malecon.
For this trip, I decided to stay at Hotel Perla and soak in the history. Pretty dang cool what treasures can be found inside the Hotel Perla. We
meandered over to Jonathon Roldan's TailHunter Restraurant & Bar and enjoyed the new buzz in La Paz.
Early am coffee outside of town before we criss-crossed some dirt trails and then ultimately slabbing some pavement through the mountains to Loreto
where our friend Omar was our host for the afternoon...he walked us around town and into the dirt-floor shrimp restraurant where we proceeded to have
the best shrimp tacos in a very very long time.
We took the smooth asphalt to El Requeson and swam for the afternoon and Baja Bob Gordon pulled in and shared his winning NORRA adventure.
Finally we arrived back to Ricardo's and he had lobster that was cooked to perfection...
Dirt roads criss-cross Baja and we found San Borja and LA Bay very quiet in what should be one of the busiest times of year. The road to El Cucero is
fun and we ran across the Baja Fool's there and tried to convince them to follow us into Calamajue Wash, but they were having none of that in the
truck they were in.
We forged ahead as Calamajue is one of the coolest places in Baja. The water is at a medium level, I've seen it higher and much lower, but the water
is flowing. You best know exactly where you're suppose to go or you might be spending the night if you are traveling in a single vehicle like we
were. Of course, spending the night at Calamajue isn't such a bad thing eh?
Coco was all smiles and cursed me out for not stopping on the way south...some rat cheese told him I was along the Pacific Side...lol, amazing! We
made deposits into the Bank of Coco before heading to a late lunch at Alfonsina's where Antonio and his family fed us amazing fish tacos. Have they
always tasted that good? I asked him how the family was and he it was all good mentioning nothing about the passing of Alfonsina.
The dirt road is very close to Gonzaga and the road in my opinion is a Mexican Super Highway. I know many of you have experienced already, but for
those that haven't...someday in the near future you will be able to visit Gonzaga with an easy one hour drive on the Super Hwy from San Felipe. Word
is the new Super Hwy is also being mapped to bypass San Felipe in the future. Progress eh? Bummer...I personally like the dirt road.
Yes, Capt. Mike you could easily land the highway...

Of course, big thanks to mi amigo Wild Bill who brought me down a 37-inch tire after I had an encounter with a pallet in the Guerro Negro dump...you
had to be there! But for our dirt trip north we really needed another spare just in case and an early morning meeting with WB in La Paz after he
worked the NORRA race for 4 days. We really didn't want to drove the highway northbound...Gracias Amigo!

Sounds great. And, I'm totally into the La Perla vibe. Nowhere near what it once was, but it holds so many memories. Gotta believe that Coco had a big
grin as he cursed you. Cannot believe otherwise.

I'll put some vids together over the next week and start going through a few thousand images for galleries, but I'm worn out right now. Time to catch
up on sleep...got some great video of Calamajue, Punta Conejo beaches, Abreojos Coyotes, Eagles near San Juanico, crisscross crossing Catavina desert
and more....I'll post it here over the met week or so...need time to look at all the footage...
