Turtle Eggs Rescued
Mexico seizes 5,830 sea turtle eggs, arrests 2

ACAPLUCO, Mexico — Authorities on Mexico's western Pacific coast say they have detained two suspects who were allegedly transporting 5,830 sea turtle
eggs recently extracted from local beaches.
The office of the Attorney General for Environmental Protection says the eggs were so fresh that they have been taken to a local facility to be
reburied in hopes they still could hatch.
Sea turtles are protected species in Mexico and extraction of their eggs is punishable by up to 9 years in prison.
The office said Monday the suspects allegedly intended to sell the eggs. Both had been arrested before on similar charges and released while awaiting
trial.
The office did not specify which of the six species of sea turtles in Mexico the eggs belonged to.

Over 5,000? It would take a long time to collect that many - loead them up, etc. Where are the turtle watchers? All those freakin orgaizations who
proclaim they dedicate their LIVES to saving turtles, can't keep an eye on the eggs? Knowing full well this area is prone to poaching? Are they
stupid? Why was this allowed to happen when millions of dollars are donated and spent to SAVE TURTLES? I want to hear from all the save-the-turle
organizations who were supposed to be on top of things in this area and WERE NOT. The Mex. govt agencies responsible for oversight, education,
protection? well, Mexico's incompetence is widely known isn't it. After years and years of turtle protection advocacy, this is shameful.

They were probably headed to government employee kitchens... that's a lot of huevos del mar that won't be served now... So many hungry political
people will now go unfed!

Not familiar with THIS situation but it's probably the same old story in Mexico..............people can be paid off to look the other way. You name
it: dorado longlining, drugs, sea turtles, out of season shrimp.
Coming from a country with an actual middle class, it can be hard for us to realize what some will do to make ends meet.
So many problems would disappear if there wasn't so much poverty and so few jobs in Mexico.
How to get there is the source of many virulent discussions.
On the Nomads board, of course...................
