TIJUANA — One of Mexico’s most recognized viola players has been killed, and investigators said Monday that the evidence so far points most strongly to a crime of passion.

Omar Hernandez Hidalgo, 38, who held a doctorate in viola from the University of Indiana, was a former member of the Baja California Orchestra and taught at the state-run Centro de Artes Musicales in Tijuana. He performed in the United States, Europe and Latin America.

“We are talking about one of the best instrumentalists in Mexico,” said Roberto Limon, a classical guitarist and former director of the Baja California Orchestra. “This is a tremendous loss.”

Friends said that his wife had reported that he had not returned home since May 31, and that he had left his viola at home. The musician’s body was found Saturday off Bulevar Agua Caliente inside a gray nylon bag left in a car with Mexico City license plates. His hands had been tied, his face taped and he had been stabbed repeatedly.

The Baja California Attorney General’s Office, which confirmed his identity Monday, would only say that his death by stabbing suggests a crime of passion, but other motives have not been ruled out.
