Laguna Sea Sports

i am wondering if any older folks here did business with Laguna Sea Sports during the mid to late '80s here.

are they still around? they sold spear fishing gear including custom guns they made.
they also did a lot of group outfitting to Baja back then.

i met a bunch of them in 1986 or so at PSFO they were diving on Isla Lorenzo daily from their camp. they drove in for a 3 week stint.

Lagun Sea Sports has been sold several times and has an interesting history.

In the 1980s it was owned by Al & Sally Santmeyer, Al passed away and Sally ran the business for a while. The guns were out of San Diego and made probably by Harry Rescigno -- Who has also passed away

It was sold to a Canadian Gordon ??? who almost destroyed the business

Several years ago It was sold to an Egyptian who's name escapes me but also owns a number of OC dive shops.

It is not the shop you remember ... Do you recall Tom Wolfe's second novel "You can't go home again?" --- You can't!

laguna sea sports history

In the eighties I had a student whose Dad worked there for many years- last name of Merker - maybe a co-owner or a founder- one of his employees was Clive Cussler - author of many novels about the sea - in one of his earlier books - maybe Raise the Titanic - he named one of the villians Merker...maybe they didn't get along so well - anyway - just a little bit of trivia
