It looks to me like he's FORCING himself to hang in there for YOUR sake! Looks like he's wistfully recalling life on the streets!

Definitely a case of severe doggie depression---needs life on the streets badly.  
Or maybe he is just suffering from a very full tummy and is begging for an ear or tummy scratch.  
Such a rough life.  
BTW---great pix---first one is my favorite---love the expression in those eyes. !
