We just camped at El Chorro about three weeks ago. There is a gate, but it is non-functional. There was a structure next to it, but it was burnt to the ground. We drove across in front of the dam and up around behind it to camp under the mesquites and had a great time. On our way out, we did see an older guy sitting on a chair with a metal box by his side and assumed that he was probably charging people to get in, but couldn't say for sure. Just arrive after 5, like we did, it's probably past his bedtime.

I actually have a little place in El Chorro and plan on driving down there in a couple of weeks.
There is a gate at the edge of town (at the burnt out building) Eduardo will charge maybe twenty pesos per day when you pass. There's camping as well, same as it's been for many years, at the end of the road, and at the clearing just before you go down the small hill to the hot springs. They now have new banos but not much else has changed. Other than a charge for camping which seems to be whatever Eduardo feels like that day. If you ask for a receipt that will keep him honest. The camping area can be pretty full from Dec to March but they always seem to find everyone a space somewhere'.
Abe's place has been gated off and the local Ejiidos are in charge of it.
Oscar just passed away last year from a heart attack...he's missed terribly.
My place is halfway through town on the left going to the springs, a sign will be hanging on the tree saying Rancho Chivirito, if I'm around. Give a holler on your way by. Or just ask any of the locals where Barbarita is.

i know the campground is still available at the end of the road but think it costs about 50 pesos a night...well worth it if you hike up the canyon from the hotsprings to the wonderful waterfall about a quarter mile upstream...you have to swim the creek a couple of times but no problem; well worth the hike...we've seen some mondo bullfrogs up there fighting and bellowing at each other...great cliff diving into a wonderful plunge pool
