WIFI adapter review and question
In an earlier thread someone suggested www.wifi-link.com to get a set up to increase the signal from a wifi source. In my camp, about 4 miles south of BOLA, the landloard supplies a
wireless signal for 4 hours a day; the signal orginates about 1/2 mile away. I've tried the little USB dish by Hawking but no-go. I purchased the
system below and it works really great. I installed the dish on my upper deck, pointed at the source and get a strong signal.
On setup and testing, we picked up another signal but could not log on. It turns out that my landlord, working with the local ejido, received a grant
for a wireless system that covers the entire town outward to about 10 miles. He thinks that before long, we will be able to buy an access code,
somewhere in the $100 peso/month range.
Here's my question:
The signal he provides is from 9:00am to 1:00pm, most days. But if you're fishing, you have to pull up about noon, race back to camp and try to check
your email before 1:00. Is there any way I can set up the computer to log on to the system, open the browser and download e-mail and send e-mail that
is in my outbox?

with some email programs (Outlook, for sure) you can leave your system logged into your account and i know it will download emails as they arrive. you
can set delivery times for outgoing, but i would think that as soon as a connection was established it would auto send/receive......

But it's so much more "mexico" to ride the quad up to Doc's, park under the tree, and check emails every couple days.
I saw your antenna. Do you have line of sight to Doc's? I probably do from up on my deck but I haven't checked. May have to try this.

And are you using a mac or pc? I noticed some of their usb setups are not mac 10.6 compatible.

For a Windows OS, do a search for "Task Scheduler".
You will probably have to play with it for a while, or get lucky and find a writeup online. Here's a little info (including sending email when away).

Do you have a web-based email address? If you use Gmail or Hotmail, I think you can actually open those with Outlook (Windows Email program). You will
need the POP3 address, password etc to be put into Outlook. Outlook, when running will automatically download your emails.

You know, I probably posted this to the wrong thread... as you were asking in this one more about how to automate your email send/receive - as you
already have your wifi antenna. My bad.
To answer your question, it depends on how you're connecting the antenna to the local network. If you're connecting it directly to your computer or
laptop, then yes, you'd still need the "doo-hickies" needed to do so, USB or otherwise.
