Getting to Mexicali

I'm planning on driving from LA area to Mexicali. It looks like you can either go down I-5 to I-8 or go through the desert on 111 or 86. Any advice?

10 to 86S to El Centro, then catch 111 to Calexico if you want the old (West) crossing, or from El Centro take I8 east to 7 which takes you to the new (East POE.
