legal residence

so I'm starting to research residency. my situation is that I live in baja full time now and have an fm3. I don't have a home in the U.S.
so for now i'm using someones address in Ca. for car registration etc. which means I pay Ca. income tax. I have looked into the South Dakota thing and it looks good except for the fact that I would have to go there to establish residency in that state. and then go every 5 years to renew drivers license.
So I'm looking to explore any alternatives including having my residency in Mexico?
I would appreciate any helpful info on this.
thanks

Go to an income tax free state like Wyoming. There are a few others.

I'm not sure why you ask. What is your issue....car registration?
I use as an address in the states Postal Annex. It's more than just a box....it's a street address. This has worked for me for twenty years. I have a Cal DL and South Dakota plates on my beater truck which I also use occasionally to cross the border....without question up to now.

To stir up more mud in the water, you may want to read this:

Well, the intent was the Domicile vs Residence..........I'm really not sure if you can "become" a real Texan.......I thought that was a birthright :?:
