Coast Guard Still Searching

As of 10:00 pm 12/29/10 the Coast Guard is still searching for a 20' pleasure craft with one adult and 3 children off of Point Loma in San Diego. The emergency call went out at 5:00 pm from the vessel who was taking on water.

I don't know what the hell this guy was thinking taking out three kids in this weather.

yikes! for now let's hope for the best and then smack some sense into him later. but you're right in the fact that all weather reports for the last 24 hours have called for some pretty serious winds (at least here in L.A. area).

:-(

I hate stories such as this.

May their Gods be with them.

I sincerely hope they're found OK. If so, they should get the kids off the boat and tow the adult and boat out to sea about 20 miles and set him adrift. :fire:..Dumb ass that he is. Only trouble with that is he's still breathing and wasting our air..

I worked on search and rescue for years...The guy must be an idiot to do what he did...Especially with the kids...One marooon's life lost is one thing...but think of the terror with the youngsters...He should be castigated.

We watched the lights from two ships out in front of us last night as they fought to get behind San martin Island and weather the storm. These are 50-80' ships and they really struggled. I can only imagine the horror that these poor kids must have gone through.

May God be with them...

Search began when a vessel assist employee heard a mayday call. Although a full search was immediately begun, I have not read any report that a boater and kids have been reported missing. MIGHT be someone making a false report.

I was boating in Newport Beach on Wednesday and seas were very calm and very little wind. It rained heavy on Thursday morning and most of the day, and high winds. Seems odd that anyone would venture out in this weather, so I am hoping it is a false report, as being out overnight unsheltered would not be good.

I really hope it is a false report. Why would anyone take a boat out with a sizable incoming storm? It just doesn't make sense.....

Now being reported that the caller said the boat had taken on five feet of water, could not provide registration number, and that he and the kids had been diving in the kelp beds. Only one communication was made, and no one has been reported as missing.

Sounding more like a hoax, lets hope so. It's dangerous for the rescue effort, but they treat each call as a real one and take the needed steps for rescue.

Hoax ?

Back when I sailed a lot out of San Diego, radio Hoaxes were pretty common. "Often" you could tell it was kids screwing around, but not always. Unfortunately, I never heard of a case where they were caught.

They've caught a few, but usually only when the perps try it more a couple times. I remember they caught a kid using his dad's boat's radio in Shelter Island some years ago after about the 3rd or 4th time he tried it.

damn shame if it is a hoax. this sort of crap can divert needed resources away from someone who REALLY needs it and might die in the process. some jail time would be a fitting punishment.
