Magic Jack Didn't Work in Baja
A few weeks ago I asked about using Magic Jack through the Telcel aircards (the jump drive-like devices that insert into a USB port and provide
wireless internet service). Well after investing $50 buying the devise and with high hopes I took it our Southern Baja home in Elias Calles. We have
neither electricity nor land line telephones but Telmex put up a cell tower last summer and we finally had internet service. Unfortunately, the broad
band speeds via the wireless aircard is too slow to support voice over internet. Too bad as it worked great at home in CA and would have solved the
lack of reasonably priced telephone calls from Mexico. Perhaps speeds will pick up in the future as Telcel upgrades. For now, save your money...

Don't know how far removed from civilization you are, but are there any WiFi hot zones in the area? I just learned here you can use MJ in one of them
on your laptop.
I really shouldn't be discussing all this techy stuff for as little as I know.

Try to do a search on google for DSL Speedtest
In San Felipe, we have 1.5Mb down and about 899K up.
Check and see what kind of speed you are getting. Also, try it at different times of the day.

That's odd, we are in Pescadero and have internet via Telcel Banda Ancha 3G and the Majic Jack works fine most of the time.

We live in La Mision and I have had MJ for 3 years it works fine. My friends in San Quintin off grid , all use MJ and telcel 3g Banda ancha it works
fine for them too.Try it at your local internet cafe and see if it works there.And I hope what you are using is a telcel banda ancha as I do believe I
have heard the ones from the states don't work here at all.k

Not every area with data has the faster 3G Banda Ancha yet.
If your area doesn't have it, you should still be able to connect, but at the (much!) lower GMS/Edge speeds. GSM/Edge is the older data system that
connections will fall back to if 3G is not available.
So you'll get internet (sort-of) but it won't be fast enough for anything serious nor internet phones. You need 3G for that.

We have an ooma system down here with a Cali # and it is FREE-as long as you have telcel you are in. Bought this several years ago, paid $275 and they
do not even have our address or credit card #

We use Vonage....carry the modem with us from San Diego, so anyone calling our San Diego number gets us wherever we are. Only problem is that
sometimes the call quality isn't great. Haven't been able to figure that one out yet....

Hola,
i've used skype for about four years now in los barriles and have had some minor issues with it but i am supportive of it.
it costs about 2 cents a minute from los barriles to the states but...it costs me 39 cents a minute calling from calif. to los barriles.
my mex cell costs me $ 1.50 U.S to call the U.S. and my att amer. cell costs me $ 1.00 U.S. a minute to call the U.S.
skype gets my vote.

Not trying to hijack the post but...
We too transport our Vonage back and forth from Texas and at times have experienced some problems. Here is what we have learned:
Reboot the Vonage router by unplugging for 60 seconds. Plug back in...it can take a couple of minutes to get a dial tone.
If that doesn't work then reboot both Tel-Mex and Vonage routers. Unplug both for at least 60 seconds, plug-in Tel-Mex router first and wait for
all appropriate lights to light-up...could take a couple minutes. Then plug-in Vonage router...wait for dial tone.
When neither of the above procedures worked we called Mexico City to talk with "Infinitum" tech. They re-set the Tel-Mex Infinitum router from
their end. We then rebooted both of our routers and that took care of the problem. Also make sure you have enough band width...we upgraded ours and
noticed a difference. The additional speed now allows us to watch "Hulu and Netflix through a PVN". Something I don't know too much about...that is
the hubby's department.
We live in CSL so don't know if you would have the same "Internet" service of Infinitum through Tel-Mex.

karenintx, please tell US ALL about receiving netflix in baja, especially baja sur.
when i try to get it, it says it is not available in my location. i also cannot receive hulu in los barriles.

Yes, B.D.R. you are correct about getting the message of "unable to get in your country"...or something like that. We use to get that message too.

We have used the magic Jack all over the states and in Mx. But it will call Canada or the US but not a Mx number.
If its not where it is, its where it isn\'t.
