Roof shingles
I priced shingles at a local Home Depot. I am planning on buying in Ensenada. Other than Home Depot, where else can I look? Is there a big
difference in price between California Home Depot, and Ensenada?

A couple of weeks back, I walked by the shingles at HD here, noticed the price and casually calculated it would cost around 65 bucks per square to
cover a roof. Like all else, it keeps going up.
I'm sure the price is a lot higher than in the states, but that's where these come from and what with the weight and restrictions to bringing in
building materials, your choices are diminished.
How many squares are you covering?

Another thing....if you think you're going to need flashing, get it in the states. Hard to impossible to find it here.

Liked to go to HD, and look at prices... the difference between what the poor Mexican pays.. and the NOB.. is "obscene"... 70-100% or more for the
Mexican..
Saw a injection moulded storage shed, (Rubbermaid) price NOB.. on sale at the HD in Lake Forest, CA for $278.. HD in Rosarito..... $689... (on
sale)..... 100' of Cat 6 for security camera (not terminated) ... $24 dollars, Rosarito ... NOB.. 11.99 terminated...
Found the security cam.. very helpful for me... day/night... color.. storage can be SD or to your hard drive... or external HD.. with pan, tilt and
zoom.. one can setup with emails, on trigger of movement ...
Not having to go outside and "look" at my age and condition, is very helpful...
Liked it for being able to "see"what it looked like outside the best...

the guy just inside the entrance road to the Baja Country Club has good shingles at a much better price.

There's a big difference between the quality of the US product and that made in Mexico. Same with Roll Roofing.
Zahori is the top of the line for domestic product here and the shingles don't hold a candle to Corning brand, available here as well.
The roll roofing is a better illustration. When laying roofing, it's unrolled in place, pulled straight and tight and, when necessary to remove
stubborn waves, kicked out by walking down the length while kicking your feet into the surface to force it to stretch and lay down. Carpet is
installed in the same manner.
Anyway, when applying this method to the US product, no marks are left on the surface of the roofing from sliding the sole of your shoe forward. On
the Mexican product, the scar is large. Most of the sand has been removed leaving a raw spot in the surface.
Point is, time and weather will affect the surface of the domestic product much sooner than the US roofing. The US product is more durable.
One more thing....some yards here will store their roofing materials outside in the sun. You don't want that.

The roof shingles I priced were $20 (lifetime), and $18 (25 yrs.) per bundle, a bundle covers 33 sq. ft. I need 3190 sq. ft, about 95 bundles. That's
just the house, the garage...I don't have the measurement yet.
Holy cow, that's gonna be a chunk of change, if the price is what Dennis said.
May have to go with plan B.

Also remember that although most shingles come 3 to a square (33 sf), many better shingles are coming 4 bundles to a square (25 sf).
Something to check before you get home and realize that you're shy 25%.
I'd find a local building supplier that can deliver - hopefully for less $.

I"ll kick this around for a couple months before buying.
Any local building suppliers in Ensenada I can call or visit when I head down next month...better yet any suppliers in the San Quintin area?

Never heard of "lifetime" shingles, Tony. Must be the lifetime of the shingle, whatever that might be.
20 yr....30 yr. is what I'm familiar with.
I think the 30 yr. shingle is the one Diver is talking about, the 25 sq. ft. bundle.
Roll roofing is your next step toward affordability.

Have you considered using tile?
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

All the major US manufactures of shingles have uped their warranty for 30 year shingles to liftime. |
