If you wait till the 5th you will have a lot of other vehicles headed that way. The NORRA Mexican 1000 race starts in Mexicali on the 5th and overnights in LA Bay. Day two from LA Bay to Loreto for an over night and the last day to La Paz. So on the 5th, 6th and 7th there will be a lot of race related traffic going down hwy 1. They don't race on the hwy only in the dirt sections. I'll be among the chase and pit crews.

Mulege in May

Thanks so much for this info! this does make a difference to know there's lots of people traveling the road - I am coming in thru TJ so will miss the Mexicali group probably - is this like the Baja motorcycle race that goes thru the desert too?

I am planning on driving from San Diego/TJ to the East Cape. Dates aren't set yet but want to leave the first week in May. I'm making room reservations for the 8th. but can get there earlier if I need to.

that sounds like it might work for both of us

That's when I am hoping to be getting to the border to cross over - sometime the first week in May - I have driven back and forth a number of times and always dread the TJ part as it is confusing but the rest of the ride is pretty straightforward - I am still hoping my friend will join me but would really love to have another or other cars to caravan with also - more fun and good support

as my friend cannot leave till the 9th I cannot make it to southern Cal before about the 11th or 12th so looks like it will not work - sorry tho as it is always good to have another car or two (tho I have driven there without that many times) and know it is fine but still it is fun to have a group

good luck finding others going down - there are other websites to advertise on also - like the baja web is one
