Can't Catch A (Spring) Break... Rosarito Police Commander killed same day Baja announces PR campaign to Correct Bad Image.

A Rosarito Beach Police Commander was shot and killed today while leaving a soccer field after playing with his two sons. The wife was also shot and hospitalized, the boys were not injured. (edit: see second version below says they were ambushed when driving by the soccer field, not playing)

Today the tourism department of Baja California announced a new PR campaign aimed towards the USA, to counter the unjust bad publicity and negative image that has hurt Baja's tourism business.

Rosarito and TJ are pulling out all the stops to get Mexican tourists to visit during the Easter holidays with many ads and vacation packages. I suppose if you are coming from Cuidad Juarez, it is still a relatively peaceful vacation spot. So much for a narco deal to end the violence any time soon.

"Mowing down police chief with his family" | Posted by Rosarito In The News

ROSARITO .- The municipal police commander Jose Carlos Ventura Isida was shot the evening of Sunday 27 March in the colony Crosthwaite while returning from shopping with his family aboard his unmarked General Motors navy blue Jimmy.

His wife was driving and received gunshot wounds to the arm and hip- and was taken to the Red Cross, while their children riding in the back seat suffered only shock, and left the vehicle desperately to go inside the Indoor Soccer facility for help.

The incident occurred around 4 pm when the now deceased and his family traveled down the street "May 5" and on reaching the junction with Calle Roberto Barrios, presumably they were intercepted by attackers who were stationed outside the Quick soccer field, witnesses said.

The vehicle was a blue Quest panel van with very dark tinted windows, and drove away after the shooting down the street that runs along the Canyon Huahuatay. Unofficially it was said the probable weapon used was a revolver, since only a fragment was found in the scene.

The crime scene was taken over by Municipal police elements led by Major Magdaleno Luis Vázquez and PGJE staff and their experts to start investigations.

Early accounts suggest that the murder is related to the death of a person from Sinaloa in Primo Tapia when municipal police repelled an attack and the Sinaloan was killed. This man traveled in the company of another man who was arrested on board a gray Malibu vehicle with license plates and KID combo inside rifles were found.

It is worth mentioning that it was the second time they tried to kill the police chief recently assigned to the delegation of Primo Tapia, and after a lot of death threats they finally succeeded.
