Any gas between El Rosario and Catavina??

Is there any? and where?

We're planning a trip down and will be doing some off roading on motorcycles towards Punta San Carlos but by the time we get back on Mex.1 around El Progresso we'll need to fuel up

Is there any gas available in between?

I have bought gas from the guys at Rancho El Descanso many times. They usually keep several drums of fuel available and sell it to you in 5 gallon / 20 liter quantities (approx).

The ranch is located about halfway between El Rosario and Cataviņa on the east side of the highway...

Hey that's great Thanks!

One thing though...
Is that on the Pacific or Cortez side of El Progresso?

El Descanso is about 8 miles before El Progreso... Here is a road log from El Rosario to the El Marmol turnoff.

Cataviņa is only about 77 miles from El Rosario, FYI.

Road Log (Miles)

0.0 El Rosario Pemex Station

14.6 Punta San Carlos Jcn.

28.5 Los Martires, San Juan de Dios Jcn.

31.5 El Descanso

36.6* Monument to Hector (Km. 161/162)

37.8 Old Road to right, Mision San Fernando access

39.4 El Progreso, signed San Fernando road

46.2 Santa Catarina Jcn. (original shipping point for El Marmol's onyx)

46.4 Guyaquil Jcn. (new home for many of El Marmol's residents after 1958)

54.2 San Agustin abandoned trailer park

54.3 Abandoned gas station San Agustin

54.4 San Agustin highway maintenance complex

56.1 abandoned Tres Enriques cafe

56.5 EL MARMOL JCN. (signed 15 kms.), just beyond is the Cafe Sonora

* approx.

A big Baja thank you goes to BajaGringo for spotting an error in my mileage figure for Hector!

Hector's monument is between Km. 116 and 117 at a curve about a mile north of the first access to Mision San Fernando.
I had listed it at Mile 31.6 from El Rosario Pemex, and it probably should be 36.6 (corrected above).

Here is Hector from space and on the ground:

and looking south:

Now, at the site (2006 photos):

the price is reasonable too. I think it's only 20 pesos more per 5 gallons than it is at the pemex...saved my burro once!

That surprised me too. Those guys could sell it at any price they wanted and knowing they are the only game in town they really don't take advantage...

Actually it may even be cheaper than some Pemex stations as they actually give you the volume of gas you ask for...

No offense Antonio - didn't mean you!

Yes, but we're taking the trail/road from El Rosario down the coast to Punta San Carlos and then back up to the turn off junction with Mex 1 then will go hit up for fuel at El Descanso which I've scaled off around 120miles

Which is good as my range is only around 150 which wouldn't get me into Catavina....:O

Yes, if you are continuing on south from the Punta San Carlos junction... Otherwise, that is only 14 miles from El Rosario's Pemex (to the north) if you need to get gas (and El Descanso is 17 miles to the south).

Have fun!

You are welcome! That's what Baja Nomads are SUPPOSED to do and be about : people helping people... We all have our favorite places or activities or talents. Just ignore the typical types on Internet boards who try and sour the spirit that most come here for.

I'm back with a couple of other gas stop questions to confirm as it's been awhile since I've been there.....

- I've got an old map with a barell gas stop marked on it about 12km on Mex1 north of the BOLA turn off, is there still someone there regularly selling gas?

- We are going to be getting into Gonzaga late on Tuesday, what time is the Pemex there usually open to? I've heard that it's closed on Wednesdays?

Last one...
- Is there gas still available at the sawmill 8km south of the Laguna Hanson campgrounds?

Again,,,,Thanks for you help

Gas is sold from cans AT the Bahia de los Angeles junction (not 12 km. north).

Sounds like you saw an old photo of 'El Crucero' with gas drums, from pre-1973 when there was a rancho there where the (then) main gulf route joined the main transpeninsular route.

Gas was also signed for sale at Laguna Chapala, just south of the Gonzaga/ Coco's Corner road junction last summer.

If they have gas, the Pemex at Gonzaga closes daily for lunch (siesta) from 2-4 pm. If the Pemex is closed, as at Rancho Grande across the road... they have there own tank, and have sold gas when the Pemex was out, before.

I can't advise on the Saw Mill situation... TW or others here may be able to answer that one!
