Telcel 3G USB in San Felipe??

I've read some on other sites that Telcel 3G is available in the town of San Felipe, although I have never seen it show up on my iPhone (yes, data roaming enabled). I have a home in the south campos, just a fantasy I have of using that technology while down in my campo or at least in town.

Anyone have any info on this?

Thanks!

I have friends that use Telcel 3G with success. Speed varies, I'm told.

I am in North San Felipe and use the Zoom 3g USB unit with Telcel and get great speeds. I also bought the Zoom 3g USB router, it works well together.

Not sure about South Campo performance.

Telcel 3G has been available north of San Felipe since November 2009, and a little earlier in town.

I don't know how far south the 3G signal extends, although somebody in Los Sahuaros was using it last year.

Over the past year, and especially in the past few months, it's become overloaded north of San Felipe (especially on weekdays) and is often unusable now.

I wrote about this recently on San Felipe Life. I wouldn't recommend it now in the El Dorado area, if you want anything reliable and fast. (so what would I recommend instead? There isn't anything, currently.).

Down south, if you have the signal, you would have less users so should be OK for capacity for a while.

Rob (using my backup Telnor connection)

Telnor over air internet around El Dorado Ranch over the past couple of days has been spotty at best. Probably the wind and weather.

No Telcel Coverage Map

I've checked out the Zoom website, the 4501 3G Wireless N Router and the 4595 3G Tri Band Modem for GMS Services look like the set up that I would get provided that I could get the service as far south as Bahia Santa Maria. Los Sahuaros (which apparently has coverage) is roughly 5 miles south of town, I live 20 miles south.

Telcel has no map showing their 3G coverage, I wish there was a way to see if it reached that far without buying the modem and see if it worked.

There is a gringo in town that sells audio video and also will rent telcel 3G USB modems by the day

You could try it out to see if it works for you?

The store is down by George's restaurant near cortez hotel
