It's a big subject.
Look for beaches with very gently sloping gradients. The ones where the surf seems to break way the heck out there and slowly rolls in. Also the
beaches that butt up against the south side of headlands that reach way out to sea. The greater the headland the more likely the beach will be good.
Woody, who is about as good at it as anyone here, fishes with fresh pismo clams. Gulp bait works well for me. Guys with mussels do well if you know
how to keep it from falling off.
Incoming tides are best as the corbina come in to feed on the beds of sand crabs.
A good area for halibut is the boundary of rocks and beach at those headlands. They're right up against the shore and can be caught with plastics.
Just slowly hop those plastics along that sandy edge and something will appear where nothing seems to be.
The other option is to fish the rocky shoreline, again with plastics, by casting to the kelp beds that may be within reach. The catch there is
calicos.

swim baits. big krocodiles. fresh clams.
edit: we didn't have much luck (1 spotty) in the 3 trips in 2011 so far. everything was right except the fish didn't cooperate.
this might have had something to do with it. they got 2 corbina after an all night soak... hardly worth the effort.

Best bait you'll ever use!
From a post I did last year. Good luck with you and your rod :-)
Here's the secret

Best fish to use in this order:
Spanish mackerel
Sand Crab
Mussel
Claim
Shrimp
Start with a box of kosher salt. Do not use iodized salt. Select a container with a flat bottom suitable for the size bait you want to
cure.....Mayonnaise jar works great too BTW. Place twice the thickness of salt in the bottom as the thickness of the bait to be cured. If your bait is
1 inch thick, put 2 inches of salt in the bottom. Place the bait on the salt followed by another layer of salt over it the same depth as the starting
layer. DONT GO CHEAP ON THE SALT! You can continue building layers a bait and salt until all the bait is covered in salt. Do not seal the container.
If you want to cover it just place a towel over the top. It needs to be exposed to the air to dry out. Seal before you go on your vacation...it be
fine by then. Unseal when vacation is over.
Small pieces of shrimp can cure in a day or so. Whole fish can take several weeks. It all depends on how much of the raw meat is exposed to the salt.
All the moisture has to be drawn out of the bait by the salt before it will be cured. That’s why a whole fish can take so much longer.
The bait stays on the hook....really nicely. It almost tough to get on the hook in matter of fact :-) Less bait being stolen......if any!
It's a knock out - got you boy - yahoooooo bait!
A true story:
Learned this bait trick, down in Point Mugu , Santa Monica Mountains ocean side, in the late 70's. Old man Murf was living in a beat up station
wagon...living off his catch and I assumed pension money. He was on the road for a long time...Point Mugu he was there for several years. We saw him
every week end. Just a Irish of a guy. Lonely. Shaved needed. Wash clothes needed. I caution my first born about him.
He taught me how to surf fish...and boy did he! I never seen Surf Perch so big....Buttermouths....oh Gods! Without this bait...I caught zip. With
it....whoa.
Old man Murf would fry the fish on his green camp stove...placed on the tailgate. Cooked to perfection! One night there as he was cooking, I asked him
just what did he do for a living...he looked at me with a embarrassing smile and said "I was the VP of Firestone! Yes...it was true for I checked it
out.
Anyhow...enjoy the bait secret. Older it gets ....the better. Keep reading the fishing post here...I am bout ready to drop a secret fishing hole
location that will blow your socks off :-) The big ones....
Old people are like the old cars, made of some tough stuff. May show a little rust, but good as gold on the inside.

If you want to know about spots just ask Woody he,s the Spotfin man a clam fan

never be without a set of Kastmasters
Anyone can catch fish in a boat but only \"El Pescador Grande\" can get them from the beach.
I hope when my time comes the old man will let me bring my rod and the water will be warm and clear.

I've surf fished Bahia Blanco at the south end, just north of where the road turns east, the last couple of years. Fishing was really good early
morning and evening before dark. I used squid and Berkley artifical saltwater peeler crabs. Lots of yellow fin croakers and a few surf perch, no
corbina for some reason. Maybe I need some of Mcfez bait.
I just use a simple surf rod with with a crappie rig with two hooks on steel leader. Laguna Manuela is another good place. Several coves and a very
long beach. Halibut and white seabass are there as well as the croakers and corbina.

The site that Russ refers to is the best surfing site on the web today, mostly southern Cal,everything from flyfishing to sharkfishing the surf and
everthing in between.
No secret baits here but the straight dope from many who really know.

Some beaches get netted pretty well. If you're not just doing badly, but not getting anything, pack up and go. Don't waste your time.
We met a group of guys that had been fishing that area for 20 years, each summer for 2 weeks. The first 15 years on a beach that suddenly went bad. It
took them awhile to figure it out but they finally did and made their move to another location and have been going strong ever since.
Good Luck to you.
