She left this world without knowing.
Mom has been gone a long time. Of course she used to tell us kids bigger than life stories about growing up in O.K. during the depression but this is
something else. Her dad was a giant of a man. Married himself a full blooded indian and times were tough in Oklahoma in the 20s and 30s so he moved
his family to Washington and became a logger and moon shiner.
So, anyway, mom said Eldred had some of the darndest sayings. And this one goes like this. "Eldred, it's so hot and there ain't no place to
swim...what do we do to cool down?" His answer was "go hang a leg."
Well, mom thought this was his way of saying "bug off, how should I know?
Eldred was on to something. Sorry about the poor quality photo but this is what Turkey vultures do to cool off... Go hang a leg!

I don't think it's a yarn. Turkey buzzards only eat about twice a month. If they can't conserve calories in between meals, they die.
When you see them aloft they are often using thermals to conserve calories they might burn on the ground, in the heat. The foot drop/move might
increase the air flow and enhance the cooling effects of flying -- anything that would put more cool air through and around blood paths like the legs.

Well that is a great story. Got a little Osage in me and I get such a kick remembering my aunt saying "Oh Darling, come on in and rest the leg".
Which meant just come in, relax and have a drink.
Got to talk with Chief Standing Bear (Osage Tribe) last week. Great man.
