Flying from US to Mulege
We've owned a home in Mulege for several years and nomally drive down.
My son-in-law is looking into to purchasing a larger plane (8-10 passenger) so the entire family could fly down together.
We live in Carlsbad, California.
If he keeps his new plane at Oceanside or Palomar Airports can he leave
directly from there................or does he have to depart from San Diego International?
Does he have to land in TJ or Loreto before landing at the Serenadad Airport in Mulege?
Any other information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Doesn't matter where he departs from the US. He files a border crossing flight plan and then his first landing has to be at a Mexican airport of
entry. For you the most convenient would be Tijuana. You could also clear at Mexicali.

Yes, you can leave from any airport in the US. He will have to register with Homeland Security and file an online form for both his departure from the
US and also file a second one for a return. His first stop in Mexico must be an official Airport of Entry, such as Tijuana, Ensenada,San Felipe,
Loreto. After filing various papers and paying fees, he can fly to any approved Mexican airport. When leaving Mexico, he will have to stop at a
Mexican Airport of Entry,does not have to be the one he entered the country through, and go through an exit procedure. His first arrival in the US
must be a US Airport of Entry such as Brown Field or Calexico and it must be the airport that was specified in his return filed with Homeland
Security. After going through an inspection then he is back to normal rules in the US. There are other things involved concerning times and
passengers. It may sound complicated but done once or twice it is fairly easy. Any other questions you can usu me.

Carlsbad is now an airport of entry with advanced notice and I think a $50 charge. I've never tried it but that's what I heard.

When you are ready to go home from Mulege, you may need fuel. There is no avgas available there, so some of us go to Loreto, fuel up, check out and
fly direct to an airport of entry in the US. If that is available at Palomar, it would be worth the $50 to go direct.

if you have the range going all the way to palomar is well worth $50 in lieu of a let down at the border. We have user service by fee too at
Scottsdale and Gateway in Mesa. $50 to clear.

what used to be simple and easy to fly back and forth has now gotten full of red tape primarily on the USA side.
my trips are fewer and fewer because of it. and Mexico just put their avgas at par with US so no real incentive to go. After 30 plus years running
around the peninsula in small planes interest wanes when you have to go thru hoops IMHO.
beats the heck out of driving though.
