Chickens - Hmm maybe the Jungle bar can raise some LOL, Probably not possible at the hotel. My dog is young and healthy, Rita seems fine and the lil puppy has a variety of problems, but is improving. I'll take the puppy to SR and Mousse can wait till I go North.
I changed the thread title - so no worries, let the chicken talk begin..
Thanks again

Oh, thanks for morphing with the thread, and a BIG THANKS for looking after Rita and the new little one.
She's a sweetie and I think you are too!

I don't believe that can be done in Santa Rosalia by Dr. Cota as he has no laboratory, but would treat an animal that came in with suspect symptoms which would include lethargy, weight loss, excessive bleeding. Treatment is about 3 weeks on Doxycycline. Better to wait until you return north to your regular vet or find a clinic in La Paz or Ensenada that has lab & ex-ray capabilities if you want to check on it now. The local vets do know the symptoms and can treat it empirically; the downside is you have to wait for symptoms to appear. The upside is that dogs that are otherwise in good health seem to resist the infection. Hope this helps a bit.
2) Secondly (and I'm hijackin' thread here) its about chickens.
We're thinking of getting a flock down here when we get the land secured.
Question: after habituating them to the henhouse like McFez says will they be inclined to fly when I turn 'em loose in the daytime? I think not, but we're not certain they won't go over the wall and move in with the neighbors.

Ah! Clip their wing feathers......clip off one inch of the tips...no fly. This procedure is harmless to the chicken (pain)

Sorry for hijack folks

Chicken Talk: I've had chickens before and one night I was out late and forgot to close their door. Next morning I got up for coffee and found them dancing' on the kitchen table! We can clip the wings, no problems, but do they grow back/must we repeat the procedure? Secondly, how 'bout chicken lice or other cooties chickens might be vulnerable to? Could these be transferred to the cats & dogs (or mesef')?
More Chicken Talk: I'd love to see real chickens at La Jungla. There's already plenty of roosters crowing there. I'm sure Lupe & Chispa would supply plenty of kitchen scraps.

Back to the Flea/Tick Talk: The stuff Shari bought it Guerrero Negro was Advantage, which targets fleas & their larva only, not ticks. She bought it for me, my two beautiful Siamese kittens actually. Its for dogs, cats and puppies at least 4 kilograms in weight. Since these babies are 3-1/2 month old kittens I put only a drop on each neck scruff (remember, cats will groom and lick the chemical). The next day there was no sign of a flea on either kitten and they've shown no ill-effect from the treatment. Very pleased!

Boric Acid: acido borico is probably known as "cal" and can be purchased at Ferreteria Yee in Mulege. Ask for Victor, speaks English, can explain how to use it. I think this is what the health department spreads all over town after the floods to prevent the growth of mosquitos & other nasties.

TickTalk -The Advantix i got says "garrapaticida" and is for para perros de mas de 25 kg. Only 2 drops on puppy, 6 on Rita, most of rest on Mousse. Seems to be working, still spraying with vinegar, with a touch of dill :)
Thx for the "cal" info!

Chic/talk - nothing to say, just wanted to use the sub heading :)

about those chickens....we had 13 chickens for a few years here and had to finally get rid of them because of the awful little chicken fleas....they were everywhere and did get on the cats and dogs...if you went into the coop, you would have dozens of em crawling up your legs....ewwww!!

it took a year to get rid of the pesky critters...not worth it in the end. The amount of eggs they laid did not surpass what we spent on chicken food....yes they ate all the compost but now my garden gets it. As much as I loved the chickens, they were a huge hassle and I'm glad they are gone.

and yes, the chickens can free range during the day and they will go back to their coop at sunset....but we couldnt keep them out of the garden...they totally trashed all plants and veggie gardens we had...grrr

Viking talk

:-)

The feathers will not grow back...

Keep the coop clean (wash out). We never had a issue with insect infestation, use of a solution of mint oil with water will run off any critter real fast . .....do keep the pets out of the coop.

If it gets to a point of smelly and or infestation...use diluted white vinegar and spray throughout. Works real quick.

BTW white vinegar will wipe out the smell of pet pee or bed wet....

Tick Talk: garrapatacida will only kill ticks, called garrapatas as a play-on words "aggarar" to grab, "garra" a claw, and "pata" leg. That's how they make a living; they grab on an' dig in like a soldier in a foxhole. To deal with fleas and their larvae (which is transferred from an infested mom to babies or injested by a cat grooming itself) you need a pulga- and larvae- cida, too.

Chic Talk: Thanks for all the good info. I had no idea you could clip tips only once to keep 'em down on the farm permanent.

Didn't know that a simple vinegar solution was so effective, both for Ticks and Chicks!

Now, how 'bout c-ckroaches and flies and other nasties?

hey all!....if you can't find any of the above mentioned products locally, pure essential oil of lavender works just as good as anything....and it smells a lot better than vinegar!...the ticks will disappear.

Or for a special treat

Did your friend understand that Frontline comes in three different size doses? He/she MAY have used the large dog dose on the "little dog".

Testing for Ehrlichiosis

Testing for Ehrlichiosis is done with a SNAP test made by IDEXX. This 4-way test requires a drop of the dog's blood and the results are almost instant. It tests for presence of four parasitic diseases, the first two two of which are VERY PREVALENT Baja: Ehrlichiosis and Heartworm, along with Lyme disease and anaplasmosis.

Everyone should have their dogs tested!

Thanks, Marla, for that good information about the Snap Test.

While you're here can you tell us a bit about the volunteer clinic that happens in Loreto, please?
A synopsis of the mission statement, contact information and schedule?
