How do you treat your foam rod grips to restore their natural feel?

After a fishing trip I always wash off my rods, including the foam grips, with water and then sometimes I use liquid detergent / water solution to wash and then rinse. Sometimes the foam rod grips become hard / rough to the touch.

Does anyone have a solution on how to treat foam rod grips to restore their natural feel?

Sand down with fine grit sandpaper will restore a bit. Otherwise it is the foam aging.
