Roosters from the beach?

My latest quest (besides getting my first wahoo) is catching a roosterfish from the beach. My primary hunting grounds have been the sandy beaches of Las Arenas La Ventana or Muertos. What lures or techniques have been most effective for you?

Mood: Fishing for fun

In the first part of July I shore fished one day out by the Faro at Las Arenas and had lots of luck with Kastmasters, Krocodiles, and lead-heads. I used colors like blue/ silver that had the most luck.

Yep, silver or blue/silver Krocs caught a few for me off the campground beach in La Ventana.

Only your extensive knowledge of all things fishing exceeds your knowledge of local beers and beer-serving establishments. :P

Carry on, my friend.
The life you live is your own; wish I could say the same.
And if you manage to catch a rooster at the beach, please post pictures.

Rangers and top water poppers will outfish underwater lures like krocadiles 95% of the time when fishing for roosters...plus you won't snag up. I have landed up to 75lb roosters from the beach with these lures retreived as fast as possible, you want them to skip along the surface.

Pencil poppers fished using a "walk-the-dog" tech are also very productive. I make my own on a mini lathe. White, white/blue, white/red, white/silver are all good colors.

Go to your hunting grounds and see what the others are using...dollar to a donut it's a ranger. Probably in 3oz, although i prefer 2 1/4 oz.

I was walking the dog with a brand new Yozuri yesterday, and had a large needlefish just nail it and vanish with $15 dollars!

The visual was almost worth it.

Were you using a leader? I use 5' of 100lb Yozuri pink flouro, and have never lost a lure to a needle yet. i love catching Needles, esp. the giant variety. But a big Rooster off the beach is king.

On a side note last week on a walk I found a brand new cd18 as well as a yozuri swimbait...Score!

Great news! I had already picked up a few Rangers simply based on advertising but they are such a unique looking lure I wasn't sure of the best way to fish them. Thanks for the advice about ripping them on the surface! Now I can't wait to get back down there and give it a shot.

Nope, no leader. Just straight 15lb Big Game. Heavy leader seems to kill the lure action. Maybe I'll try some 40lb floro as short leader material.

If you use a large duolock snap(minus swivel) at the lure end and a swivel minus the snap at the main line connection, the leader has little effect the action. I also highstick the rod to keep the leader out of the water as much as possible.

some of you have seen this before.

I caught this rooster off the beach at Sol Mar/Cabo about 10 years ago. 20lb. main line w/ 2 meters 50lb. leader. 3 1/2 " ranger with a 10" half beak the roosters were chasing onto the beach hooked on to the ranger.
