road conditions to Bahia Ascunsion
Can someone tell me if the first 15km or so out of Viscaino to B.A is finished yet? Last March we drove with our 5th wheel and another trailer towards
B.A. but the road was so bad that we turned around after 10-13 km...and 1hr of driving for that distance was enough for me ..but I still have my heart
set on going there and Shari has probably forgotten that I promised her some smoked salmon if i can ever get there.
Sure hope its this year!!

Please don't let a 'bad road' keep you from seeing Baja... You can't see much without using bad roads. Shari's hospitality and Bahia Asuncion is worth
it!
The older pavement to the Tortugas/ Asuncion split (48 miles) may have pot holes, but the newest leg into Asuncion (27 miles) should be fine.

Thanks David ...We've been wintering in the Baja for 10 yrs..I know there's bad roads ..but there's bad and painful..and that road was the worst I've
ever seen ..By the way I appreciate all the knowledge you post for us.
I keep hoping they fix that road before we're too old too travel.

You bet... also, I am expecting a better detailed report from one of the zillion Nomads who go there regularly or Shari herself. I was last on that
highway in July, 2007 just after they began paving the newest section.

You really missed out, BajaKeela. Because had you continued, not only would you have fully experienced the irrepressible concussions commensurate with
that execrably pot-hole-ridden road out of Vizcaino, but upon your arrival in Bahia Asuncion you would also have had the unparalleled pleasure of
weathering the Pacific Ocean's incessantly lashing winter winds whipping in you the face at 25 miles-per-hour off of 55-degree water!
Ah, yes, March in Bahia Asuncion. In a word, "paradise!"

I carry windbreaks so no little wind is gonna scare me away..
and yes it would be paradise...anywhere in Baja is where I want to be in the winter. Last winter at El Requeson..nice bunch there.
Where I live is beautiful...but it rains all winter....so I'm leaving before the deluge. Twenty years retired now so time is a ticking..gotta go to
Baja while I can.

It is not as bad as it was at that time---some of it was replaced and the rest was repaired. HOWEVER
The pot holes toward the beginning that were filled dug out. Now many of them have been filled with a clay dirt, but it is digging out. But most of
those are not too bad.
Some areas are in great shape, and other parts are not so good---quite a bit of weaving trying to judge where the potholes are not as bad and there
are some that are very large large and deep---the ones that everyone crawls over if they cannot be avoided. And they can be quite a surprise as the
road can change from great to bad quickly.
Fewer sand dune intrusions right now which is good.
Once you hit the turn-off to BA, that new road is in good shape.
There is hope that 2012 will bring a better road.
This is all as of three days ago, so who knows, maybe they will start working on it soon.

It's all in the detail and just what I needed to know... Maybe leave the 5th wheel in Viscaino and just do a day trip and check the road before going.

the potholed part of the road is a crap shoot every time as the conditions change so radically from week to week. Last week it was awful but sounds
like they filled some of the holes again. So the best thing to do is call or ask here days before you plan to drive in...up to date info is the best
info. Some roads can be horrendous but great a week after they are graded....Bajakeela, we are looking forward to trading some of that smoked salmon
for abalone!!!

I did the road in 3 weeks ago and back out a week later. Like Shari said it changes daily due to heavy dump truck use. Coming in the pot holes were
rough for most of the 40 miles. Some look filled in, but it was loose sand and you would get sucked in. The sand drifts were across the road in
several places. Coming out, the sand drifts were barely there and some pot holes had been patched. Don't be fooled, take it slow the entire road. On
the way out, I did the "frontage" road for a few miles which was much smoother. (Dirt road parallel to paved road.) The turn off road into Asuncion is
smooth and it actually looks like they are making it a 4 lane road, really. It is well worth the trip as it is a beautiful place with fun people and
fantastic Tacos Cameron. Sharis campground is on the beach and a stunning place to stay, 1 minute walk to the surf, great views, town is walkin
distance, great restaurant near by ( green house, no sign), internet, bath/shower and even laundry.
