I can't help thinking it has to get broiling hot inside those race vehicles wearing a fire retardent racing suit and helmet. Is there such thing as a trophy truck with a/c?

The word was SCORE wan't able to insure the event. Frankly, I don't see the sport lasting in the USA... Mexico welcomes the events.

Oh, sure... I remember talking with Roger Mears back around 1977 when he was racing a Jeep Honcho truck... and was showing me the plastic side windows/ drivers net for the AC to work in the cab.

HERE:

On July - 7 - 2011

SCORE Announces New September Race Will Be Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge Of Champions. Insurance issues cause SCORE to move Primm race South of the Border. Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions desert race to be held in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico. SCORE International confirmed today that the next race of five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be the new Tecate SCORE San Felipe Challenge of Champions to be held September 9-11 in San Felipe, Baja, California, Mexico. The race replaces the Primm 300 race that was cancelled this year because of insurmountable insurance issues.

The new race, for 17 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks, will run over the same course that was recently used for this year’s MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March of approximately 250 miles.
After executing the event agreement today in Baja California with SCORE President/CEO Sal Fish, Francisco Perez Tejada Padilla, Mayor of Mexicali stated that, “The cities of Mexicali and San Felipe are pleased to announce that SCORE has decided to continue supporting Baja California by adding another race to their calendar in Mexico. This shows the great communication achieved by the Federal, State and Municipal authorities with Sal Fish. We are pleased that SCORE recognizes our previous hard work and continues to have confidence in our support. This new race will become the epicenter of desert racing during the month of September.”

Fish stated that, “While SCORE regrets ending a 16 year relationship with the Primm Valley Resorts and Las Vegas Events, we are pleased to open a new door with Mexicali and San Felipe and provide our participants with an exciting Baja racing challenge in the friendly, relaxing and scenic city of San Felipe.”

Score wanted Primm to cover the increase in insurance cost by the tune of $50,000 and Primm said no so SCORE went south first to do it out of Mexicali but somehow ended up in San Felipe. SCORE asked to be compensated for the expenses of moving it to San Felipe and a local group headed up by Pat at El Dorado Ranch helped them do it. Looks like SCORE will have 4 races in Baja and 1 in the US from now on.

That's the one, Kris! However, in 1979... I was also in the race (#619)... so it was not that one I chatted with Roger (and Walker Evans) at.

Pre-running a week before the race:

We broke down (blown differential and snappled axle) climbing towards Ojos Negros. Possible damage from a boobie trap the locals rolled in front of our racer... getting pelted with stones too... and I thought Mexico was the 'Amigo Country'!! :o:lol: I never got to drive in the race, but you were located along my section (San Matias Pass to El Crucero). We were in a Datsun 510 modified for Baja... like the Saab in your photo.

Interesting that Rob was only 5 minutes faster in this race starting first than in the SF250 race where he started 11the in the TT class and had backmarker bikes and ATVs to deal with. It was the same course both races.
