Can't drink it steal it
This guy has been trying for days to get a drink and he's just not built for it. So in frustration I think he has ideas of grandeur and tries to take
it.

Today was the first time I saw Sparrows trying to figure out our popular Hummer/Oriole feeder.

I've had an old cake pan out now for a couple of weeks and only have a couple of takers each day. I put shell in the bottom and made a couple of
islands too but it still isn't as popular as I would have imagined.

You're right, Russ.
In my aviary on the river in Mulege there was a beautiful little red sparrow just like yours. I never recall her drinking from the pan of water I had
on the floor of the aviary for the canaries to drink and bathe.
Two things:
-Good job with the pan of water setup. It may get too hot, so try moving the pan to an area with indirect sunlight that's safe and protected.
-Get a bird water bottle; they're called a "bebida". There are three kinds: one, the upside-down bottle with a long curved dispenser
that hangs on the inside wall of a birdcage; two, there are some hummingbird feeders with the same setup that sparrows will share. The third kind of
bebida are more common around here, sit on a flat surface and come in two sizes, 1 and 2 liters. People who keep chickens have these. Little birds
will drink from them, too, if they're placed in a suitable spot.
Check these places: La Colmena, Hugo's vet supply on Ice House Road, Dr. Cota in Sta. Rosalia and the food warehouse on the highway in Sta. Rosalia.
There were also many generations of red house sparrows that nested up in the eves of the house. It was neat to climb up a ladder at a respectful
distance and look at the little babies as they grew and fledged in the wild. They were there when I moved in, rebuilt their home after the hurricane
went over the rooftop, and are doing well now, I hope. Thanks for the memories.

Never considered the water being too hot but sure makes scene when you consider a dark pan in direct sunlight. I did order a bird bath and may have to
jury rig an umbrella during the summer (smile).
