'Til 2013 do us part? Mexico mulls 2-year marriage

Pretty leading edge thinking.

Mexico City lawmakers want to help newlyweds avoid the hassle of divorce by giving them an easy exit strategy: temporary marriage licenses.

Leftists in the city's assembly -- who have already riled conservatives by legalizing gay marriage -- proposed a reform to the civil code this week that would allow couples to decide on the length of their commitment, opting out of a lifetime.

The minimum marriage contract would be for two years and could be renewed if the couple stays happy. The contracts would include provisions on how children and property would be handled if the couple splits.Link to article

I once read from a reliable source that upwards to 70% of marriages in Mexico are "Common Law." In a country of 113 million, that's a lot of lost license revenue.....not to mention that if one decides to disband, they have but to pack up and leave.
I would imagine that the government is less concerned about marital bliss than fiscal windfall.

This plan is a social joke. Who could take it seriously?

Glaringly out of context.

How does a paragraph about abortion find its way into a news article about a proposed change in marriage laws?

"Abortion is legal in Mexico City, while the Supreme Court ruled this week to uphold state laws in Baja California that say life begins at conception."

Some strange editorial decision-making there at Reuters.

Except for its abrupt shift in topic that was an interesting article, thanks for posting.

My inlaws spent more than 60 years together until death did them part, in common law marriage. They had 13 kids and as far as I or any of them know the old man never fooled around on the side. When they reached adulthood the kids constantly begged their parents to get married so legitimacy would eliminate certain problems with papers etc. My Suegro always refused. I am certain he truly loved my Suegra, but in his words, he didn't want to "lose his freedom".

All my childhood I wanted to be older. Now I\'m older and this chitn sucks.

they never married .... amazing story !!

temporary marriage does indeed sound a bit odd.

but around here in la bocana, it is a regular Peyton Place. couples join and separate like one changes channels on the TV. so that is odd too.
