Where to spend Thanksgiving and save on gas

Thanksgiving weekend travel is expected to increase 4 percent over last year despite record-high gas prices for late November, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

Southern Californians are itching to hit the road after postponing travel, said Marie Montgomery of the auto club.

It will cost them as they gas up. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded in San Diego was $3.75 on Wednesday -- up from $3.16 a year ago, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Guage Report.

Those who travel east and south can save the most money at the pump. Here's a survey of gas prices at destinations within a reasonable day's drive of San Diego.

Tijuana: Just across the Mexican border from San Diego, unleaded regular is selling for $2.57 per gallon, cheaper by about 50 cents than the lowest state average within the U.S. (Missouri).

Phoenix, Ariz.: Pumped in from west coast refineries, Arizona gas still is significantly cheaper than in tax-intensive California. In Phoenix, that means $3.27 per gallon of regular.

Las Vegas, Nev.: Feeling lucky. Think again: $3.51 a gallon.

Los Angeles: At $3.77, gas prices are almost even with San Diego.

Nationwide: The average price for gallon of gas is $3.37, up 49 cents from a year ago.
