An Osprey Stole my Windsock
Yesterday morning an Osprey flew low over my house and the unusually long bunch of "sea grass" trailing behind him caught my eye. Ahhh, nesting time.
Later I noticed my windsock was missing from the fishing pole it's mounted to. I figured the swivel had rusted or a big wind gust had detached it and
I'd find it lying in the dirt under the pole. But the windsock was nowhere to be found and the swivel and line were still attached to the pole?
One of of the guys working on our house saw me staring at the empty fishing pole and said. "El gavilán stole your papalote. I saw him fly by with
it".
There were no witnesses to the crime so I don't know if he snatched it off the fishing pole or found it lying in the dirt and nabbed it. But somewhere
nearby is the flashiest Osprey pad on the peninsula.
I hung up a new one but my windsock stash is running low and I'm watching this one, well… like a hawk.

Don't forget, in Mexico Ospreys are called Falcon de la Playera, T Shirt Falcon so maybe the rascal just needed a new coverup, not new nesting
material.

Great photo. And I would love to see a photo with your windsock decorating an Osprey home.

How fortunate you are that the worst thing that will happen to you this week, or month, or year in your little piece of paradise is an Osprey
'ripoff'.

They do love to decorate. He/she probably just couldn't resist such cool
addition to the nest!

There's only one prominent nest in the area so I went to check just in case. The windsock might be in there somewhere but it wasn't really obvious. It
would have been a crack-up to see it blowing in the breeze.
Active nest building going on
The homeowners were nearby and anxious for me to leave the area
Elgatoloco you are correct, it's pretty cool to be here.

That is interesting. Is the material iridescent?
I cut strips of iridescent wrapping paper and hung 6' lengths over my cherry trees last year. The flashing was obviously off-putting to the Jays and
Crows who are my main foe.
The flashing must not irritate the raptors??

Kate- a neighbor built this platform on his property for the Osprey. I've only seen it from a distance until today and didn't realize it's almost as
tall as a telephone pole. It's been there a few years but this is the first nest.
vgabndo- these windsocks are made from long strands of iridescent, mylar-like material that give them a sparkling quality. Funny, the box says:
"shower your yard with rainbow colors and keep unwanted birds away". No mention of the specific species. There's a Shrike who likes to sit on the top
of the fishing pole with windsock whipping all around him.
Santiago- I like the other avatar too. Just switching it up a little.
Skipjack- I'll send you the coordinates
