diane got it right...I think it was mentioned here before too...use the pumps where the taxi's line up! In GN, there is a single pump at the teeny weeny Pemex past the hospital where all the taxi's go...there is always a line up at that particular pump....wonder why?

When in GN, we always fill up at the one lonely, one pump, Pemex. Extremely nice attendant (I am guessing he is also the owner).
The station is almost all the way west of the town just before you get to the salt plant.
It's also a good excuse to stop at the "vampiro" stand a couple of blocks before.

I think it was three years ago. We were staying at Caracoles in GN. We were heading South. I mentioned to the desk clerk that I was going to be soon in need of gas. He cautioned me to not go to the Pemex way into town because thy were ripping people off. He recommended we go to the First station in Vizcaino by the Asuncion turnoff to fill.

This was before the new Pemex opened opposite Caracoles.

Methinks that since virtually all Pemex stations are franchised it is very difficult to determine the good guys from the bad.

That said, last month, although I would never fill at it, the South Vizcaino station was a stop simply because one of our party really needed a restroom. Unlike almost all of the newer stations, I found that this one had no amenities. No store. Nada. Just four guys playing cards in an empty room.

I feel I must stick up for Guerrero Negro. It's not the armpit. Cut it some slack......

Off topic: I find myself using Guerrero Negro as an example of where I go in Baja (half way down). I do go further south but most of the time I'm in this area. I work with a lot of Mexicans and when I head south they always ask where I went in Baja.

Cabo? La Paz? Ensenada?

"No", I say, "Guerrero Negro", north or south give or take 100 miles.

They usually look at me and ask, "where's Guerrero Negro?". Half way down.....

I'm not making any sense here, totally rambling so I'm hitting the eject button.

Later.

I lived in GN for many years and while it isnt a tropical tourist destination, it does have it's merits.

One thing I liked was that it has a psuedo cosmopolitan atmosphere because unlike many mexican towns, it has a large population from other places like DF, Guadalajara, Sinaloa, San Luis Potosi...professional people that came to work at the ESSA, salt works. So there are more "cultured" folks that bring or participate in things like sports, nightclubs, theatre etc.

They are more progressive, open minded and educated so there are events where one can have spirited conversations with interesting people about diverse topics.

So socially, GN was more fun...there is a local market for entertainment so they even had live rock and roll bands play on the weekends, discos, sports bars, excellent dining choices, good motels etc....unlike Asuncion that doesnt even have a bar!

GN has so much to offer in the way of food, lodging and entertainment compared to other towns in the county. You can actually get chinese food, italian, japanese etc. It also has excellent services like dentist, mechanics, welders, hardware stores etc.

There are also many unique natural areas many tourists passing through dont know about like La Isla and the wetlands around it, el Canal, Ojo de Liebre lagoon, Las Dunas out by the airport is stunning, La Posita, a great swimming spot, Tomatal and Laguna Manuela are day trips.

The weather pretty much sucks as it is cloudy most mornings, gets sunny for awhile and closes in again in the late afternoon...but the people are friendly and fun.

I was told that it has it's own microclimate caused by the thousands of hectares of salt evaporation ponds...evaporation=cooling...which makes it's own cloud...makes sense. Cars sure rust out fast there!

Yeah I fill up in JM going coming and Vizcaino.

Don't mind saying I love GN. Always have. First, it represents crossing over into BCS -- warmer weather, more fun. Next stop, Santa Rosalillia and the Cortez.

I like fog and GN reminds me of San Francisco weather. Blows through, clears then sunny, then returns. You can smell the ocean.

GN has good people, places to eat and stay, and estuaries. Definitely dog friendly and fun to walk.

Here's a GN experience: I watched a young man/woman (MX) on a jet ski going back and forth in one of the estuaries. They were spinning around having fun, getting some speed and then passing it on to another member of their group. After seeing me watching for awhile, the guy, the driver, offered me the water craft. Like ''common have fun take it!'' I declined but thought where else can this happen? Not to many places to me.

I agree with those that are defending GN. The place grows on you, and once it has, you realize there's really quite a lot to see there, and unlike some other places on the peninsula, I've had few bad things and lots of good things happen to me there. But then again, I stay at El Morro more often than not when I'm there.
