Nomad Whale trip...ALMOST rained out!
Sometimes you just have to take a chance and go with your feelings. We had a Nomad whale excursion planned for months for Feb.16th but as the fates
would have it…the weather was horrible that day. The forcast was for rain and wind but we took a chance and headed out to the lagoon anyway with a
positive attitude (and our fingers crossed)
The road was dicey as it rained HARD all morning and was supposed to be very windy in the afternoon so we all sat down to a hearty breakfast at the
restaurant at the lagoon Interpretive Center. Some folks from Mulege rescheduled for March but the others hung in there to wait to see if things
cleared up.
A few hours later, the rain subsided and the sky started to clear so we all decided to go for it. It was a tad windy but the sun even came out and the
whales were in a frisky mood. We were welcomed by a friendly dolphin who played with us for awhile. The very first whale we encountered couldn’t wait
to come over and visit our panga. She went directly to Zoe who was delighted to give her a little pat surprising her with the rubbery texture of her
skin. The dolphin played with them for awhile too.
This gal had a calf that was very curious but mom wasn’t quite ready for her baby to get too close to the boat and she kept rolling it over her back
to put her massive body between the panga and her baby. She became a bit irate with junior so we left them alone.
On the way to search for more whales, a boisterous mama breached several times wowing the crowd! Whales were popping up all over the place but our
lanchero was on a mission to find a particular male that was a real showoff.
He was right and we found this extremely sociable whale who was having fun swimming to and from the other 2 pangas in the lagoon. He would come over
and visit each person in turns, and then he would saunter over to the other boats and do the same.
We spent about an hour with him and finally left to head back to shore. About 10 minutes later, he surprised us by playing dolphin right next to the
boat which made us all scream! He had been following us back in that crazy whale. Just when he was trying to sidle up to us once again, another big
whale came over and pushed him away and wouldn’t let him get near us. This whale providing interference has some serious scars from having been hit by
a ship propeller.
We encountered three different friendly whales this trip and saw so much action all around us. Televisa was filming and the segment is supposed to air
on the news on Monday. We were all so glad we had been patient and decided to venture out that day.
After our awesome trip, we had a nice lunch of fish and shrimp tacos and seafood chowder. Island Builder and his wife set out north and the other
Nomads headed for Asuncion.
The skies cleared and wind dropped and it was a beautiful afternoon so Zoe and I hung out for awhile at the beach with an old amigo I hadn’t seen in
10 years catching up on each others adventures. It turned out to be an amazing day at the lagoon and I cant wait to get back there in a couple weeks
for my birthday bash.

Shari - beautiful pix. We saw a whale being guided along by ? dolphins close to shore this a.m. Also wondered if it was being stalked by smaller
killer whales, but it did seems as though it was dolphins.

oooooh..lets hope they were dolphins...orcas LOVE this time of year when they can prey on weak whales and babies..they eat the tongue of the
younguns...what a delicacy...ewwww.
I once saw a sealion trying to bite off a rope dragging a lobster trap that was wrapped around a whale's tail stock..we ended up finishing the job for
him but I thought it was pretty neat.

Some really great photos, Shari. In all the years we have made the trip from NOB, there have been a few that involved foul weather. Especially along
Highway One.
I guess it just comes with the territory.

Fantastic fotos, Amiga. The whales love the Lagunas calm waters especially in bad weather. Lots of westerly winds down here on the s/w Pacific
coast. It's been blowing all week with only one morning surf session before the wind came up! Spring weather very early?! Glad to see you guys enjoyed the whales regardless of weather; looks like Oregon. Tio

si tomas...it's like winter here now and more cloud and rain in the forecast next week too...hurray for la sierra.
It turned out to be a much nicer day than we ever could have imagined and for that I am ever so thankful.
