I wonder if BajaGringo has a personal connection to this from his Abalone project. |
Very, very sad for the families.
From what we have heard, there has been a recent problem with the abalone at Cedros. They have monitoring equipment there and it appears there has
been a lack of oxygen. Perhaps that was the reason for the meeting. |
i was told from a friend who lives at Isla de Cedros, that it was a annual meeting that takes place after the end of the lobster season, also that
most on that boat are from Isla with families there.
my condolence to the people of Isla, and the families of those lost at sea. |
Thanks for that information.
Such a tragedy and what an impact it must be having on that small community.
Maybe some made it to shore and are alive----we can hope, anyway.

My misteak, only two of the seven survived. But it is better then all seven dying. I read the first paragraph and assumed all survived.
Sorry.
Translation from the Enenada.net article......
All were alive after dump the Mako II boat one boat less than 23 feet in length (7metros) on Board of which traveled seven people noted Pesca
Secretary Carlos Fernández Ruiz to reveal part of the statements of the two survivors of the shipwreck.
According to the story of Antonio Victorio Moreno and Francisco Tapia Mellón, the survivors after the accident, seven remained clinging to the vessel
pantoqueada knowing that they were close to the coast, but as they spent hours one were dropping.
Survivors point out that apparently the intention was to reach Punta Eugenia, the coast more nearby that the accident was a few kilometers from the
place where they had sailed in Punta Eugenia.
This area is traveled on foot for about 60 elements of the Navy who have made long walks to review the sites where the castaways could have been
dragged.
According to the Secretary for fisheries, who gave a press conference to publicize the search progress, acknowledged that as the hours pass, the
chances of finding survivors are reduced.
However he clarified "although so far not found any of the missing five, it has not dropped their guard, continues the search and are hopeful"
Accompanied by the Commissioner of fisheries Ramón Corral Avila who made a tour of the entity, confirmed that they had managed to secure a helicopter
of Navy or you can fly closer water and slow to find in the area.
At the same time, the Mexico Navy, who coordinated the search, has studies of flows and how coordinates the bodies moving in this region which would
tend to the South, towards Bay of turtles or even to Asuncion Bay.
One of the expectations is the rapporteurship of the survivors and curricula of the Navy within search and rescue where they have studies of how they
behave the bodies in this area what is different if it must vest lifeboat or if it does not, the flow of currents pulls him differently.
In this case, all were clinging to the vessel but were close to the coast and considered that they were dropping apparently to swim to the coast by
what could be on beaches, rocks, cliffs or islands because they were not beaten in the boat but if they were dropping in different times
Fernández Ruiz Recordó the wreck of Erick boat angling wrecked on the shores of the Gulf of California on July 3, 2011.
Erick disaster there were people who swam up to five hours at a time and the last rescue of a person with life was 32 hours later and had the broken
leg.
They finally reported that since Thursday, relatives of the disappeared have moved to Bahía Tortugas, waiting for news while the President of the
FEDECOP this also in Bahía Tortugas watching needs in the area
It should be noted that this day officials will travel to the area of the wreck and interview with families of the victims. |

a couple of kilometers is a long swim even in summer when the water is over 70 degrees. this time of year they wouldn't probably make it before
succumbing to hypothermia.
if the others were found clinging to the boat (what i would have done in the sitch) it stands to reason that the others could not swim and/or were
somehow disabled in the capsizing.
very sad, indeed! growing up in and around the ocean it's hard to get a grasp on someone not knowing how to swim. i think vgabndo said it well.

this tragedy has been a nightmare on so many levels. My heart goes out to the families waiting on word of their loved ones.
But this accident will definately not be in vain and has already caused changes in safety regs for the cooperativas. We were told by the vigilancia
that all pangas will be checked for safety equipment like flares, life jackets and radios and fishermen will be required to wear their PFD's...we'll
see.
there are helicopters scouring the coastline and navy ships as well all around Asuncion. The water is very very cold right now and I dont think one
could survive in street clothes for more than a couple hours before suffering hypothermia.

finally one of the fishermen's bodies was found intact close to San Pablo so the search has been stepped up. It was thought that no bodies would be
found because of the likleyhood of them being consumed by giant squid in the area. But the body was in very good condition due to the cold water.
About 20 pangas just took off from here for a day of searching the area in hopes of recovering the remaining 4 bodies. The cooperativas in the area
are asking for cooperation in the search.

We knew one of those lost at sea and this is a great tragedy for the families and friends of those who perished. There are conflicting stories coming
out as to if there were life jackets or how many there were. Also it appears they made the trip with no radio and neither of the two leading boats
posted a watch on the boats following. We don't let our guys 50 meters from the shoreline without life jackets and a floating hand radio. Hopefully
changes will be made to minimize the chances of this story repeating itself again.

A tragedy of this magnitude affects many communities in the area and state as they are such close knit families...so many people have lost friends or
family in this accident that could have been avoided...but such is life on the sea.
unfortunately life jackets in the hold of a panga or radios that arent in waterproof bags attached to the person dont help much when a boat quickly
capsizes and people are in the water in high winds and seas...there are lots of serious questions about this tragedy like if they should have left so
late in such poor weather and I'm sure the other panga operators are upset they didnt keep a closer eye on their companero. I am sure new regs will
come out of this.
