Mexico sends official letter of intent to USA: wants to close San Ysidro POE for remodel
Yikes! Hard to believe, but apparently Mexico has sent an official letter to the USA saying they will re-route all pedestrian and vehicle traffic
from San Ysidro to Otay Mesa. There is mention that the southbound 5 and 805 are not capable to handle the traffic. I am presuming this is for
southbound traffic only.
I hope and seriously doubt it will happen, but this is why people are always confused by the mixed signals Mexico sends. They can't seriously promote
TJ and Baja for commerce and tourism and then close the worlds busiest border crossing at the same time, can they? Maybe this is just politics, not
sure...

It's been a long time coming. Twenty some lanes coming out of Mexico....always jambed up. And what? four?....going in with tourism traffic only a
small part of the congestion? The numbers just don't make sense.

I can understand the vehicle problem, but why stop pedestrians too? Can you imagine what this would do to thousands of school kids who would have to
find a way to get to Otay Mesa after school, and then back home?

well, the POE street infrastructure on Mex side does need a remodel,... but the Mexicans really should go out to bid and request bids from engineers
and constructors capable of reconstructing the kaos w/o closing POE.
the kaos on the mexican side is really due to homeland security being understaffed, causing traffic to back up into TJ.
perhaps the letter sent to USA is a way of causing fear in the businesss community to cause political pressure to force homeland securuty to increase
staffing...
as long as homeland security dufuses are slow as molasses, the border problems will persist

I was wondering how they are going to build the new southbound lanes that are part of entire rebuilding of the border crossing and deal with the
traffic at the same time. I understand the current southbound lanes are going to become northbound lanes and new southbound lanes are to be built west
of the current ones. Isn't this proposed detour to Otay for southbound traffic a temporary thing while the new lanes are being built?
I'm looking forward to the completed project. No doubt it will load up to max capacity just like the current crossing, but the capacity will be
increased in both directions.

Their game is as old as the hills. HLS wants more money....they slow down the cross border traffic saying they can't afford to
improve.......influential Mexicans make some phone calls...additional funds are allowed.
Pretty pathetic.

not just influential mexicans. many gringos rely on cross border trade for living. SAN economy would collapse w/o TJ business. for better or worse,
TJ and SAN economies depend on each other

Going southbound into Mexico does congest at the bottle neck during rush hour- but usually runs fairly fast otherwise- mostly because every car is not
stopped and every passengers documents checked like going northbound.
For Mexico to be serious about not letting contraband in (including cash, drugs and guns), they do need to inspect every car they way the USA does.
That will require not just a remodel to add more inspection lanes- but a whole new entry inspection protocol to follow and then staff and train up to
it. I do not know of any Mexican border entry that does this car by car right now.
Even if that is what Mexico needs and is planning, they certainly should find a way to do it without closing the southbound border to foot and car
traffic. I have seen plans of the expansion in the past- but never noticed a construction timeline of "phases of construction " to accomplished the
expansion without disruption (or paralysis) on the southbound side. We'll see I guess.

There is no mention in the article you linked, or rather copied from some hate site about redirecting traffic to Otay Mesa.
According to a Mexican I know from another forum. There are long term plans to move the current San Ysidro entrance to Mexico west of El Chaparral.

I don't know Wooosh but perhaps you misunderstood the articles you linked to. I read them both using translate.google and they are hard to understand
but I think what they are saying is that there is a plan to close the current southbound lanes in October so work can begin on changing them to
northbound and use the new "El Capparal" southbound lanes. The project on the Mexican side is called El Chapparal, which is mentioned. The problem is
the new roadway on the American side to the new southbound crossing won't be ready.
No where in those two articles is there a mention of re-routing to Otay nor is there mention of closing the pedestrian crossing. Where did those ideas
come from?

Well they might re-route to Otay if things don't go as planned but I've been following the news on this and I've never read about a plan to do so. I
bet, knowing it's not a sure bet, they delay the conversion of the current southbound lanes to northbound until El Chapparal is ready on both sides of
the border.

There's just no available real estate to allow much of anything at SY to increase the number of lanes. Just have to believe that unless totally crazy
people are in charge, the new lanes out by El Chapparal are open before they shut down traffic at SY, pandemonium will prevail.

Let's just hope they work out a workable construction schedule. They said the current construction would not cause longer delays because the other
lanes would have double-booths. And look how that has turned out. When Mexico wants to build something fast- they get it done though.

California-Baja California Border Master Plan
Perhaps this will give some insights. It's from 2008. which makes sense due to the amount of time it takes for agencies to move!
