A very volatile time in Mexico. Many people lost money when the peso was devaluated. Foreign debt defaulted?! Refused foreign aid for earthquake
aide. Do you remember the new currency that was used with the 3 extra zeroes?! They wouldn't fit in your wallet. Wasn't that long ago. Thanks

In the early 1980's, I was at the PEMEX station in Bahia de los Angeles and saw Patricio, in his shop, at the drill press. He had a stack of the old
one peso coins on the the drill press drilling a half inch whole right through the middle. When I asked him what he was doing, he said they were worth
more as washers than money.

I met De La Madrid at Mexico City Country Club in 2009 after I finished playing the ninth hole. He was sitting with a few golfing buddies at a table.
My friend, who is a member there introduced me and he stood up and shook my hand and asked how my game was going and where I lived. After I told him I
married a Mexican girl and lived in Ensenada he said I made the right choice. He then showed me his belly putter and asked what I thought of it. Nice
guy!

At the time, I was living in San Miguel de Allende. My then girlfriend was a well known sculptor and painter. She knew the De La Madrid family. As he
was the hand picked successor to the PRI presidency, he was quite the busy fellow, preparing for his ascension. (Sounds kinda religious, doesn't it?)
Anyway, during the annual Festival La Cervantina in Guanajuato, he was unable to make it for the biggest event at the major theater, and so he gave us
his box seat. Ray Charles was the featured performer. What a night! What a festival. If any of you ever get the chance, get to the festival!
RIP, Sr. Presidente!
