BAJA BEACHES PACKED FOR HOLY WEEK
Perhaps we shouldn't jump to conclusions with this news. It fails to mention where all these tourists came from. The vast majority of plates down
here in PB were Baja Cal.
A better indicator of a return of tourism from the north, in my opinion, would be the border crossing stats, but that didn't occur to Sandra Dibble.

I heard from the high schoolers (local la bocana hids who just got back from bahia concepcion and surrounding areas) that the beaches were packed...a
mix of canadians and mexicans and americanos ....
when we drove south 2 days ago - there was barely any traffic heading south. the beaches around and south of rosarito were NOT fully packed and there
was a lot of traffic heading north.

and our hotel cortez was 100% booked. first time in a long time. maybe folks are not camping but staying in hotels ??? that would be a good sign of a
recovering economy.
I enjoyed what Rob wrote about how Baja is a perfect fit FOR HIM. what a nice way to word it. and 25 thousand folks living there - lots and lots of
people. some friends were shocked when I said I lived in paradise ... they have been here and like it but would never refer to Baja as paradise.  thank goodness it is not for everyone

The visitors to San Felipe last week were, for all intent,
Mexicali residents and Hispanics from the US, I don't believe
the Hispanic pop of the US, born in the US or not,
ever developed the FEAR that casual Gringo US Tourist
did of Mex in the last 4-5 yrs. due to the bad US Press
of Mex, I don't notice any change in attitudes toward Mex
travel here in So Cal and I'm glad it is not for everyone
but an increase in tourist $ would certainly help Mex

I don't know about any of the other beaches but here in Rosarito it was at least 80% MEXICAN and few Americans.

If you notice the cars, trucks and vans driven by these folks and the jet skis and boats they pull you will see the emergence of a Mexican middle
class.....and that's a danged good thing IMHO.

All you have to do is watch in the grocery stores and Costco etc to see the number of people using credit cards and debit cards. It sure is different
from ten years ago.
Anyway..........one large reason the Mexicans have money to spend is because they don't have mortgages to drain them dry month by month.

Naturally. The Mexican middle class has predominated the BOC beaches since the pavement went in back in 1973. This fact has been extremely good for
supporting our local economies.
The vast majority of Easter beach campers & tourist/visitors has always been Mexican nationals.
I do what the voices in my tackle box tell me.

Raise your hands to those guys and you will find theirs up too, but holding a .40 Glock or a 9mm Browning to answer your 'wave'.
You know this truism by now, having spent enough time driving to the Dakotas. 'When driving north from Baja, the very first person who will return a
friendly motorist's wave.... would be someone in Wyoming.'
And in North Dakota, you are shunned if you do NOT wave at everything on the road, including bison, cows, deer, antelope, and that radar cop over
there.

we talked to lots of people in the towns in baja sur and while yes of course the beaches were crowded...they always are as this is the only week of
the year the mexicanos get vacation time so they all head to the beaches. Asuncion was like a ghost town as everyone goes over to the gulf side for
some nice warm water this time of year. But the beaches were not packed as they often are...there were fewer campers everywhere along the gulf side.
Playa Buenaventura looked pretty empty....
We work hard to find a beach that isnt crowded and prefer solitude but even our secret beach had 3 campers on it this year...sheesh! but they were
very far apart...here is our home away from home.

Los Cerritos was busy like hell. Reggae fest of course had something to do with that. Mostly Mexican nationals but alas the waves were lousy.
The grass is always greener....
and so, there is always a better spot in Baja
