Descansa en Paz Maria Romero & visit to San Ignacio's Los Alamos

It was with sadness and gladness(her pain is over) we bid fare thee well to a grande dame Maria Romero Camacho who was 103. We had the great pleasure of attending her birthday parties, having her here on Mother's day and were blessed by her spirit. She has 10 children and countless grand kids and greatgrand kids who were all in attendance yesterday at her home up the canyon in San Ignacio.

Except for the intense heat, I always enjoy being at her ranchito...it's like stepping back in time so I wanted to share some of their life with you. Here is her casa and her brother who built the rock shelf it sits on was telling me how the water came up to the last row of rocks during hurricane Jimena making everyone a bit nervous.

here is one of the grandkids house behind the main house.

and her brother's place next door

and the puppies new casita

a classic baja dog photo...the visiting brother puppy

here is the outdoor kitchen and the view from the patio...I love the big palm bench.

I always learn so many new things when I visit the ranchitos. It was a bit far on a rocky road to town so when they run out of cigarettes, they just look for an old dried out pithaya flower stem to smoke. I tried it and it was really delicious...kinda like beedies...(please dont judge our cousin by his red eyes...he just got back from digging the grave in a high wind)

it was so hot, I was getting dizzy, so we went to cool off at the presa for awhile which is always a magical swim. My favorite spot for swimming is at Los Alamos which is just south of Baja Oasis hotel...there is a sign to turn.

this is the ancient canal that brings the precious water to the village

We ate pozole under the Pacifico tent next to Maria's coffin with family and told stories about her life. There were tears and laughs and we will miss Maria but I am glad she has been released from the pain of her weary body and is on her way to a new adventure.

It was so amazing thinking of all the changes these elders have seen. Some of them lived in caves in the canyon there.

One of the young Villavicencio men was telling us about a photograph of his great grandpa during the revolution and that he was killed by Pancho Villa! I look forward to seeing those photos and hopefully can scan them and show them here.
